The Gathering: Focus 34–35
The Gathering is Robert Monroe's name for an assembly of nonhuman presences that he perceived surrounding the Earth. He gave it a chapter in his second book, Far Journeys (1985), and the Monroe Institute later assigned the region to Focus 34/35. The 2012 Monroe Institute web overview of the Focus levels describes a region beyond the human horizon, where intelligences from other parts of our physical universe, from other universes and from other dimensions can be found, and where communication with them is possible.
The reason given for their presence is consistent: they have come to observe the Earth at a time of change that could matter well beyond our planet. An Institute representative explained on Paranormal Review Radio, in a show posted online in 2013, that Monroe sensed they could not intervene but might advise. Bruce Moen, who explored the region after Monroe, met groups there who told him similar things, including one that worked like a news crew sending reports home and another that wanted data in case such changes ever reached its own world.
Today the Gathering sits at the advanced end of the Institute's programs. The Exploration 27 page calls Focus 27 a common springboard to Focus 34 and 35, and Starlines I explores energy systems within Focus 34/35 and beyond. Participants describe beings there who seemed completely alien yet became familiar through playful interaction; Susan Taylor named two of them Heckle and Jekyll. These are first-person reports, and they differ in detail, which makes the Gathering a subject for careful comparison rather than a goal for beginners.
Monroe's name for an assembly of nonhuman presences watching Earth, placed by the Institute at Focus 34/35 and explored only in advanced programs.
Key points
Monroe described it in Far Journeys
Monroe gave the Gathering a chapter in Far Journeys, his second book. He describes perceiving a vast multitude of glowing presences encircling the Earth, varying from clearly formed to barely there, all waiting for an event. They come from nearby energy systems, and some travel in physical craft. Monroe's own label for the event is the big show, a phrase online retellings still use. Monroe died in 1995, so later accounts of the region come mostly from Institute programs and the people who attend them.
The Institute pairs it with Focus 34/35
The 2012 Monroe Institute web overview of the Focus levels lists a single entry, Focus 34/35 (The Gathering), rather than separate descriptions for 34 and 35. Moen says Monroe first pictured a spherical shell of consciousness far out around the Earth and later described it as Focus 34/35; he adds that he cannot tell whether Monroe could not decide or the region is spread across both numbers. Programs follow the same pairing, and the Starlines I page speaks of Focus levels 34/35 and beyond.
Why they are said to gather
The consistent answer is observation. In the radio representative's retelling, Monroe was given the sense that many factors were converging at this point in history, that how humanity handles the change could affect the visitors' own existence, and that they could not intervene but might advise. Moen's groups gave specific versions. One acted like a news crew gathering coverage to send home. His second Gathering group wanted to understand Earth changes so that, if something similar happened on its home world, it would have data to work from.
Moen's groups: a news crew, love, telepathy
Moen offers the fullest first-person account. He says his second Gathering group spoke in high, squeaky tones, like the little robot in Star Wars, a language other parts of himself had taught him beforehand. Its spokesman asked for a demonstration of unconditional love, because emotional impact seemed part of Earth's changes; Moen says the group soaked it in and wanted more, and further experiments followed. On a later trip the spokesman offered him a taste of their telepathic awareness on one condition: do not think in human terms.
Susan Taylor's Heckle and Jekyll
Taylor, writing about an Exploration 27 program, says she looked forward to what Bob had called the Gathering in Focus 35. On arrival, two personalities greeted her, so alien that outside the Institute's supported setting they would have been terrifying. She named them Heckle and Jekyll and built trust with them over a couple of days through play. On the last tape journey one asked to merge with her to taste physical existence; she agreed and calls the merge incredible. In return, she says, they gave her a shimmering circle in her field of vision that works as a standing doorway to Focus 35.
An Explorer session on a Gathering contact
A May 1986 Explorer session summary is titled "A different entity related to the gathering." Asked who or what it was, the contact answered that it is an energy in a separate reality, that it seeks out other realities to expand its consciousness, and that it can do so without taking part. It said it uses no sound, that its members interpenetrate while keeping their individuality, and that new information is known to all of them at once. Like other Explorer material, it records a reported exchange, not an identification.
Where the Gathering sits in today's programs
The Gathering has been part of the Institute's advanced work since at least 2000. Introducing researcher Skip Atwater at a 2000 professional seminar, a host said he talks to the beyond-Exploration-27 group just as participants are exploring Focus 34 and 35, the area of the Gathering, and that his conclusion is that there is no separation and love binds everything. The current Exploration 27 page says visiting Focus 34 and Focus 35 is common when participants use Focus 27 as a springboard, and tells them not to be surprised if they connect with nonphysical intelligences.
In their own words
Quotes are checked word for word against the recordings and documents they come from. Bracketed words correct transcription errors; “…” marks an omission.
“Focus 34/35 (The Gathering): A region beyond the human horizon, outside of the realm of human consciousness as we know it. There, non-human intelligences from other areas of our physical universe, other universes and other dimensions can be found, and communication with them is possible.”
“Monroe perceived that there were a number of ships and other kind of interplanetary or inner, you know, vehicles from other dimensions gathered around the Earth, observing the Earth at this time of change, and that they knew that how we worked with the change that's taking place on the planet could actually affect their existence in some way.”
“This place is a place where there are beings from other home worlds in our physical universe. There are beings from other universes, and there are beings from other dimensions. And they've all sort of gathered there to observe what we've come to call Earth changes. Lots of reasons. You know, one of the groups that I asked about it, they were essentially like a news crew. You know, they were out with the cameras, you know, film at 11, back to the studio. They were just there gathering the news and sending it back to the home world, folks.”
“Immediately upon my arrival in Focus 35, two personalities greeted me. They were so totally alien that if I had encountered them outside the security of my CHEC unit with trusted friends and trainers nearby, they would have been utterly terrifying. Safe in familiar surroundings, I approached them with curiosity and openness rather than fear. Heckle and Jekyll, as I irreverently named the pair, found me just as foreign. Over the next couple of days we developed a mutual sense of trust through playful interaction.”
“And we arrive and there's the spokesman, and I was really happy to see him. And even happier when he said, "Bruce," he said, "how would you like to enter into our form of awareness? How would you like to experience what telepathic means?" Huh? Yeah, yeah, I do. I'd like to do that. He said, "Okay." He said, "There's only one condition." He said, "As you're, as you're experiencing this." He said, "I want you to remember not to start thinking in human terms."”
“We seek out other realities to expand our consciousness. We can do this without the experience of actually participating. We study the workings of what you have called the universes. We do not use sound for communication as you do.”
Important things to consider
Treat it as an advanced topic
The Institute reaches the Gathering through programs with prerequisites, Exploration 27 and Starlines, not through the first Gateway material. Focus 10, Focus 12 and Focus 27 come first, and the Focus 27 and I-There topics on this site give the background the Gathering accounts assume. Reading about the Gathering is fine at any stage, but it is not a milestone to hurry toward.
Compare the accounts and note where they differ
Taylor meets two personalities she names and befriends. Moen meets organized groups with spokesmen and agendas. The 1986 Explorer session records an energy that uses no sound. Online videos describe fleets of ships. These descriptions do not combine into one briefing, and the Institute's own definition stays general. Read each as a separate report about the same named region.
Keep Monroe's text apart from later commentary
Details that circulate online, including thousands of craft, rescued star seeds and an imminent shift, come from commentators, not from the Institute's overview. The Institute representative on Paranormal Review Radio noted that Monroe did not explain everything he was told. When a video presents specifics as Monroe's, check them against the Far Journeys chapter itself.
Read 34/35 as one entry
Do not read too much into the slash. The Institute's overview lists the two together, Moen wonders aloud whether Monroe could not decide or the region is spread out, and the Starlines I page uses the same pairing. If a source claims that Focus 34 and Focus 35 hold sharply different contents, ask where that comes from; the Institute's public descriptions do not draw that line.
Everything rests on first-person reports
The Gathering is documented by Monroe's account, Explorer session summaries and the recollections of participants such as Moen and Taylor. There is no independent verification of any of it, and the details vary from person to person. Even a Miranon-based commentary on the upper focus levels calls them impossible to verify except by comparing experiences for a consensus. Take the accounts as evidence of what practitioners report, and decide for yourself what that means.
Not a forecast, and not advice
The Gathering is described as watching a period of change, but none of the accounts above gives dates, outcomes or instructions. Do not use it to decide anything about health, money or safety, and treat any video that attaches a timetable to it as speculation. The Institute's programs are explorations of consciousness, not medical or financial guidance.
Common questions
What is the Gathering in the Monroe system?
The Gathering is Robert Monroe's name for an assembly of nonhuman presences he perceived around the Earth, described in a chapter of Far Journeys (1985). The Monroe Institute assigns it to Focus 34/35 and defines it as a region beyond the human horizon, outside human consciousness as we know it, where intelligences from other areas of our physical universe, other universes and other dimensions can be found and communication is possible. In Monroe's account and in Institute retellings, the presences are there to observe the Earth at a time of change. Bruce Moen, who explored the region after Monroe, says Monroe pictured it as a shell of consciousness far out around the planet.
Is the Gathering Focus 34 or Focus 35?
Both. The Institute lists a single entry, Focus 34/35 (The Gathering), and its programs speak of Focus 34 and 35 together. Moen says Monroe first called the region the Gathering and later described it as Focus 34/35, and he is not sure whether Monroe could not make up his mind or the region is spread out a little. Susan Taylor places her meetings in Focus 35 during Exploration 27, while the current Exploration 27 page names both numbers. The Institute's public descriptions do not split the contents of 34 from 35, so it is safest to treat the pair as one territory.
Why are the beings at the Gathering said to be there?
Observation is the common answer. According to an Institute representative on Paranormal Review Radio (posted online in 2013), Monroe perceived ships and other vehicles from other dimensions around the Earth, watching a time of change and aware that how people handle it could affect their own existence. They seemed to come from many places, and Monroe felt they could not intervene but might advise. Moen's groups give specific versions: one acted like a news crew gathering coverage to send home, and his second Gathering group wanted data on Earth changes in case something similar happened on its home world.
Can I get to the Gathering with the Gateway tapes?
In the Institute's own sequence, the Gathering appears in advanced residential programs, not in the beginner material. The Exploration 27 page calls Focus 27 a common springboard to Focus 34 and 35, and Starlines I explores energy systems within Focus 34/35 and beyond. Both list prerequisites, and Starlines I requires an approved application. The Institute representative on Paranormal Review Radio added that in the Monroe system this territory involves higher-level gamma-type signals, but that much of the work can also be done in deep meditative states using intention, though the technology makes it easier.
What do people report finding at the Gathering?
Reports vary. Susan Taylor, writing about Exploration 27 in the Hemi-Sync Journal, met two personalities in Focus 35 that she found completely alien; she named them Heckle and Jekyll, built trust through play, and says one asked to merge with her. Moen reports groups with spokesmen: a news-crew group, a second group that wanted to learn about unconditional love, and a spokesman who offered him telepathic awareness on the condition that he not think in human terms. A 1986 Explorer session summary records an entity that said it uses no sound and that new information is known to all its members at once. Taylor describes approaching the beings with curiosity and openness, and Moen describes friendly exchanges with his spokesman.
Is the Gathering the same as the UFO fleet in YouTube videos?
They overlap, but they are not the same. Monroe's chapter includes craft among the assembled presences, and the Institute representative on Paranormal Review Radio spoke of ships and other vehicles from other dimensions, so the UFO reading is not invented. But the Institute's overview speaks only of nonhuman intelligences from other areas of our universe, other universes and other dimensions, with no fleets, timetables or rescues. Commentators such as Jordan Crowder, who reads chapters of Far Journeys on his channel, link the Gathering to the big show that Tom Campbell also describes and to extraction stories about star seeds. If a video attributes specifics to Monroe, check the chapter itself.
Is it safe to try to contact nonhuman beings at Focus 35?
The Institute offers this territory only in advanced programs with trainers and prerequisites, and it presents the work as exploration, not as medical or therapeutic practice. Susan Taylor's account stresses the setting: she met her beings inside the Institute's CHEC unit with trusted friends and trainers nearby, approached them with curiosity rather than fear, and was guided back to ordinary awareness by the tape. She also wondered whether a lasting doorway could cause trouble if the beings opened it unannounced. If you have a mental-health condition or any doubt about intense inner exploration, talk to your clinician before enrolling in a program like this.
In Monroe’s books
Summarized in our own words; the books are not reproduced on this site.
Far Journeys. A late chapter titled The Gathering opens after months without unusual out-of-body activity. Monroe perceives a vast multitude of glowing presences encircling Earth, from clearly formed to barely there, and is told they come from neighboring energy systems, some in physical craft, to witness a rare event.
Far Journeys. The event is presented as a convergence of many possibilities whose resolution could alter not only Earth's time-space but neighboring energy systems, hence the interest. Monroe likens it to a crisis holding extreme danger and extreme opportunity, with the assembly watching to see whether something new survives its birth.
