JUST GETTING STARTED?

A little context before you explore

Who was Robert Monroe?

Robert Monroe, often called Bob, wrote about experiences in which his awareness seemed to extend beyond his physical body. His search for an explanation grew into experiments, books and recorded conversations with other explorers.

His 1983 CBC interview traces that change from being unsettled by unexpected experiences to becoming curious about them.

What is the Monroe Institute?

The research and educational organization associated with Monroe’s work. Its archive follows a wider community developing audio methods, running programs, discussing research and reporting experiences.

Hemi-Sync is an audio process. Gateway Voyage is a program. Focus levels describe states of awareness. Explorer sessions are recorded conversations.

Five ideas that make the archive easier to read

An experience can be the starting point

Monroe’s work begins with accounts of awareness seeming to extend beyond the physical body. An out-of-body experience, or OBE, is the name for that reported experience.

Explorer #1 describes an out-of-body experience in conversation with Monroe.

Audio is part of the method

Hemi-Sync is an audio-guidance process intended to support particular states of awareness. Gateway is a structured way to learn and explore those states.

The sound method, the training program and the experience someone reports are three different things.

Focus numbers name states of awareness

Focus 10 describes the mind remaining awake while the body is described as asleep. Focus 12 describes expanded awareness. The numbers serve as signposts in the source material.

The familiar Focus map names selected numbers. It does not define every integer as a required step.

The Explorer sessions are conversations

Volunteers report their perceptions while a monitor asks questions. The recordings preserve their words, pauses and exchanges. A transcript is a written version of that conversation.

Miranon is a reported communicator in several sessions. SHE is an Explorer code; a code alone does not establish a person’s identity.

The vocabulary changes across sources

Monroe’s early books use Locales. Later accounts introduce terms such as I-There. Explorer reports and later authors add other maps and interpretations.

Keep the speaker, source and version in view when two passages use the same word differently.
