Exploration 27

Exploration 27, known as X27, is the Monroe Institute's advanced residential program for Focus 27, which the Institute says Robert Monroe defined as the area beyond the limits of the Earth Life System. Lifeline brings participants to the Park and its reception center; the Institute says X27 takes you beyond them into four further areas it names the Education Center, the Planning Center, the Healing and Rejuvenation Center and the Coordination Center. The Institute presents the week as a guided journey to a place of unlimited creation, with access to information, creativity, healing and what it calls universal love energy.

The Institute's description also introduces I-There consciousness, Monroe's term for an energetic composite of all your personalities and experiences from other lifetimes, and says Focus 27 can serve as a springboard for visiting Focus 34 and 35, the region Monroe called the Gathering. Graduates describe both ends of that range. One participant felt so at home in Focus 27 that, told to return, they reacted with an adamant no way. Another met two personalities in Focus 35 so alien that they would have been terrifying outside the security of an Institute booth, and developed a mutual sense of trust with them over a couple of days. Institute researcher Skip Atwater studied the Healing and Regeneration Center in Focus 27 with 87 experienced participants.

The publisher of the Gateway Experience says its album Union, A Journey Beyond Time and Space, is based on Exploration 27, so part of the territory can be approached at home. Everything reported from Focus 27 and beyond is first-person experience, and the researcher who studied it framed the open question himself: is it out there, or is it in here?

Exploration 27 goes beyond the Park into Focus 27's four centers, the I-There and optional visits to Focus 34 and 35, with accounts from graduates.

Key points

Where X27 begins: past the Park

Lifeline brings participants to the Park and its reception center in Focus 27. The Institute says Exploration 27 takes you beyond the Park and Reception Center, which participants will have explored earlier, and into four further Focus 27 areas, the Education Center, the Planning Center, the Healing and Rejuvenation Center and the Coordination Center, which it says participants explore in detail. It describes Focus 27 as a state that opens access to creativity, information, healing and a universal love energy.

Who can take it, and how the week runs

The Institute lists Exploration 27 as an advanced five-day, six-night residential program. Admission requires an application and approval, and graduation from one of several earlier advanced programs, with Lifeline among them; only one is required. The days run from about 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in morning, afternoon and evening exercise blocks supported by Hemi-Sync audio, with breaks between. Graduates describe listening in individual chambers, which they call CHEC units, with trainers and friends nearby.

I-There: Monroe's term for the larger self

The Institute describes I-There consciousness as Bob Monroe's term for an energetic composite of all your personalities and experiences from other lifetimes, and says it is readily available in Focus 27. Participants may, it says, take away insights for their consciousness journey, past, present and future, retrieve historical data, examine artifacts, develop ideas for new creations and connect with nonphysical intelligences. It adds that graduates return with experiences they can anchor in daily life.

Focus 34 and 35: the Gathering

The Institute says Focus 27 can serve as a springboard for visiting Focus 34 and 35. At the 2000 professional seminar, an Institute speaker introducing Skip Atwater said he speaks to the Beyond Exploration 27 group just when they are exploring those levels, the area Monroe described as the Gathering, and that Atwater concludes there is no separation and that love is the force binding it all. Susan Taylor, an art teacher and Institute outreach trainer, wrote that she went to Exploration 27 anticipating the great adventure of experiencing the Gathering in Focus 35.

The Healing and Regeneration Center, the most studied place

Atwater says the Healing/Regeneration Center is a Focus 27 experience tied to the Park or reception center concept from Lifeline. In a two-year qualitative study he asked 87 experienced participants in the Institute's Beyond Exploration 27 program to describe it, sealing the question in an envelope until afterward so that expectations would not color the answers. Seventy-two percent wrote an answer. The Institute's page today says participants may invite physical or emotional healing, release, forgiveness or a stronger life force, at their own choice.

What participants report

Accounts range widely. One participant wrote in the Hemi-Sync Journal that Focus 27 felt like home and that, when instructions came to return, they reacted with an adamant no way. Taylor met two personalities in Focus 35, nicknamed Heckle and Jekyll, and says that as she descended to ordinary reality they said she would receive a gift: a constantly available doorway into Focus 35. Atwater recalls that when he asked who gave Bob the Hemi-Sync idea, he was told to look it up in Focus 27's library, where the answer had to do with shape.

Bringing it back: creativity and daily life

Taylor, who began with the Institute in 1996 and completed Gateway Voyage, Guidelines, Lifeline and Exploration 27, says the Focus 35 connection has enhanced her art and teaching. She had worried about parental disapproval of using Hemi-Sync with her students and says a solution presented itself only after Exploration 27. She notes she has no statistical analysis, only twenty years of teaching experience, but reports a calmer, more productive classroom and higher student creativity.

The home version: Union, based on Exploration 27

The publisher lists Union as a Gateway Experience album it introduces as A Journey Beyond Time and Space, with eight guided exercises including a special tour of Focus 27, a healing center and an experience of graduating from the Earth Life System. It states that the album is based on the Monroe Institute's Exploration 27 program. The residential week is longer, adds trainers and a group, and has the prerequisites described above.

In their own words

Quotes are checked word for word against the recordings and documents they come from. Bracketed words correct transcription errors; “…” marks an omission.

“Exploration 27 was a real treat. More than half of the participants were good friends from previous programs, and I anticipated the great adventure of experiencing what Bob had called “The Gathering” in Focus 35. Immediately upon my arrival in Focus 35, two personalities greeted me. They were so totally alien that if I had encountered them outside the security of my CHEC unit with trusted friends and trainers nearby, they would have been utterly terrifying. Safe in familiar surroundings, I approached them with curiosity and openness rather than fear.”

“In Focus 27, time had the same flavor as the hour and a half in the crop circle and the meditation in Stonehenge. In each experience, I felt “at home.” In fact, in the expanded Focus 27 space, when instructions were given to return, I reacted with an adamant “NO WAY!””

“We give them many years of experience, in some cases, by coming to the Gateway Voyage and a Lifeline and then Exploration 27 and [BX] 27. It's sort of a natural filtering process of people learning how to experience and report in these realms, and then have sent them out there on this exploration and asked 87 of them. So tell us what's happening to you. And looking back and seeing whether there is anything that is common to their experience: can we say something about this realm of the Healing/Regeneration Center? Is it out there? Or is it in here?”

“But having this notion that Bob got this information from elsewhere, I know what I'll do: I'll ask, who is the guy that gave this Hemi-Sync stuff to Bob? And really, what does it all mean for humanity? Well, I was rebuffed from [34 and 35], in a way, and they said, go to the library and look it up. Which one of the areas in Focus 27 is the library? Okay, so I went into the library [in] Focus 27, and I began to look it up. And it had to do with shape.”

“So I think it's the same thing happening out here in Focus 27 realms and the Healing Regeneration Center: we imbue the atmosphere of this process with physicality, for reasons of familiarity and being able to talk about it with each other. So forgive my word as I slipped back into talking about this as a physical place, when I have an understanding myself, but it's probably more of some sort of process through which we pass, some sort of process that we experience.”

“Since that realization, I have had no problems living in two dimensions and have found ways to utilize the Focus 35 connection to enhance both my artwork and my teaching. My first intent was to successfully incorporate Hemi-Sync and the other TMI tools into my curriculum. I didn’t think about how to do it, I just did it, trusting that the right approach would manifest from the other side of the door. When I play Hemi-Sync tapes, lead the kids through guided journeys into Focus 10/12, or prod them into discussions about consciousness and reality, the words/methods flow to me from the portal.”

Important things to consider

These are reports, not verified facts

The centers, the I-There and the Gathering are known only through participants' accounts and the Institute's description of what the program offers. Atwater posed the open question himself in his study of the Healing/Regeneration Center: is it out there, or is it in here? The sources do not settle it, so read the accounts as experiences to compare, not as a map confirmed by anyone.

Place or process?

Atwater cautions that describing Focus 27 as a physical place is a convenience: we give the atmosphere physicality for familiarity and so we can talk about it, but it is probably more a process we experience. The same center appears under several names: the Healing/Regeneration Center in 2002, the Healing and Restoration Center in a 2021 Monroe Journeys essay, and the Healing and Rejuvenation Center on the Institute's current page.

Security shapes the experience

Taylor says the secure setting let her meet the Focus 35 personalities with curiosity instead of fear, and that outside it they would have been terrifying. The residential format, with trusted trainers and friends nearby, is part of the method. At home, choose a quiet, safe space and never listen when you need to be alert.

Check the prerequisites

The Institute names Lifeline among the programs that qualify you for Exploration 27, and it requires an application and approval. Qualifying programs and dates can change, so confirm the current list, schedule and fees on the Institute's program page before planning.

The Gathering is an option, not the program

Short online descriptions sometimes treat Exploration 27 as a trip to the Gathering. The Institute's page presents Focus 27 and its centers as the destination and Focus 34 and 35 as places participants may visit from there. Reports of encounters there come from individual participants such as Taylor.

Healing language

The Institute's description speaks of inviting healing, release and forgiveness, and graduates describe their experiences in personal terms. These are accounts of experience, not treatments. Keep up regular medical care, and talk with your clinician before changing anything.

Health caution

The Institute advises anyone with a history of seizures, auditory disorders or adverse mental health conditions to consult a physician before listening to Monroe Sound Science. Exploration 27 is an exploration practice, not a medical or psychological treatment.

Common questions

What is Exploration 27 (X27)?

Exploration 27, or X27, is the Monroe Institute's advanced five-day, six-night residential program for Focus 27, which the Institute says Robert Monroe defined as the area beyond the limits of the Earth Life System. It goes beyond the Park and its reception center, which participants explore earlier, and into four further areas the Institute names the Education Center, the Planning Center, the Healing and Rejuvenation Center and the Coordination Center. The Institute also describes I-There consciousness and optional visits to Focus 34 and 35. Skip Atwater asked 87 experienced graduates what was happening to them as they explored the Healing/Regeneration Center, and other graduates describe everything from feeling at home to meeting alien personalities.

Quote 1Quote 3

How is Exploration 27 different from Lifeline?

Lifeline, open to Gateway Voyage graduates, covers Focus 23 through 27 and centers on retrieval and service: helping people who are stuck after death and visiting the Park. Exploration 27 requires an earlier advanced program such as Lifeline and concentrates on Focus 27 itself, going past the Park to four other centers and the I-There, with Focus 34 and 35 as follow-on destinations. The Gateway Experience albums mirror the pairing: Voyager is based on Lifeline and Union on Exploration 27.

What do people experience in Focus 27?

Accounts vary. One participant wrote that Focus 27 felt so much like home that, when instructions came to return, they reacted with an adamant no way. Skip Atwater describes asking a question in the Gathering and being told to look it up in the library in Focus 27. Susan Taylor met two alien personalities in Focus 35 and kept a doorway to them afterward. The Institute says participants can connect with creativity, information and healing, examine artifacts, and invite physical or emotional healing, release or forgiveness at their own choice. These are subjective reports, and the sources do not verify what was encountered.

Quote 2Quote 4

What is the Gathering, and do you go there in Exploration 27?

The Gathering is Monroe's name for a region in Focus 34 and 35, which an Institute speaker said in 2000 he described in Far Journeys. The Institute's page presents Focus 27 as the destination of Exploration 27 and says it can serve as a springboard for visiting Focus 34 and 35, so a visit is something participants may do from there rather than the program's main subject. Susan Taylor went to Exploration 27 anticipating the great adventure of experiencing the Gathering and met two personalities there who later gave her a doorway back.

Quote 1Quote 6

What do I need before I can take Exploration 27?

You need to have completed one of the advanced programs the Institute lists as prerequisites, with Lifeline among them; only one is required. Lifeline itself requires Gateway Voyage, in its residential, virtual or online form. You must also submit an application and be approved. The program runs five days and six nights, so check the Institute's page for current requirements, dates and fees. Anyone with a history of seizures, auditory disorders or adverse mental health conditions should consult a physician before listening to Monroe Sound Science.

Is there a Gateway Experience album for Exploration 27?

Yes. According to its publisher, the Gateway Experience album Union, introduced as A Journey Beyond Time and Space, is based on the Monroe Institute's Exploration 27 program. It contains eight guided exercises, including a special tour of Focus 27, a healing center, and an experience of graduating from the Earth Life System. Union is a way to sample the territory at home; the residential week adds trainers, a group, the four named centers explored in detail, and the program's prerequisites.
