Patterning
Patterning is one of the mental tools of the Gateway Experience. In Focus 12, the state of expanded awareness, you concentrate on a single objective, whether physical, emotional or intellectual, hold it as something already accomplished, and project it outward with the intention that it will be realized within a stated time. The Threshold album teaches it as One Month Patterning, the Adventure album extends it to One Year Patterning, and the Institute's Human Plus series includes a patterning tape called Mobius West.
The best-known written account is the 1983 Army assessment of the Gateway process by Lt. Col. Wayne McDonnell, approved for release by the CIA in 2003. It lists patterning as the second of the Focus 12 tools, after problem solving, and explains it with McDonnell's holographic model: thought patterns formed in expanded awareness create holograms of the situation you want, and those interact with the universal hologram to bring it about. The report adds a built-in brake. The more complicated the objective, and the further it sits from your current reality, the longer it takes, and Monroe trainers caution against forcing the pace.
A popular Gateway teacher on YouTube calls patterning a form of manifestation, and the Institute itself uses the word in some audio titles. Participants' own descriptions are plainer. A woman interviewed in the Hemi-Sync Journal in 1990 described using the Mobius West tape as a lens for her intention, setting the time frame in the present and holding the outcome for her greater good. The practice is simple to state: define one outcome clearly, picture it complete, set it moving and let it go.
Patterning is the Gateway exercise of holding a chosen goal in Focus 12 as already achieved, then projecting it with intent for a stated time frame.
Key points
Where patterning sits in Gateway
The 1983 report lists six tools used in Focus 12, in this order: problem solving, patterning, color breathing, the energy bar tool, remote viewing and the living body map. The albums spread them out. Threshold runs Introduction to Focus 12, Problem Solving, then One Month Patterning. Adventure adds One Year Patterning, and Exploring includes Mission 15 Creation and Manifestation, which the publisher describes as a Focus 15 state of creation and manifestation without calling it patterning. Outside the Gateway albums, the Institute's Human Plus series offers a tape called Mobius West for the same purpose.
Step 1: reach Focus 12 the usual way
The report places the concentration inside a Focus 12 state. In practice that means the Gateway preparation (the Energy Conversion Box, Resonant Tuning, the Gateway Affirmation and the Resonant Energy Balloon, in whatever order your recording gives them, since sources differ) and the count through Focus 10 into Focus 12. On the albums, patterning is the third exercise of Threshold, so Introduction to Focus 12 and Problem Solving come first. A facilitator at a 1993 seminar said participants got less out of Focus 12 tools such as Color Breathing and the Living Body Map until they had reached the state.
Step 2: choose one objective and know what you want
The report names three spheres for the objective: physical, emotional or intellectual. A presenter at a 1993 Institute seminar explained why a group program saves One Month Patterning for home: you have to know what you want to be, because when you start programming, that is probably what you will become. The Institute's own examples for Mobius West are ordinary ones: a job change, a strained relationship, a task you keep putting off.
Step 3: set a time frame
The report says the objective is held as destined to be realized within the time frame specified. The albums build this in: One Month Patterning works on a month, One Year Patterning on a year. The Mobius West sheet says that tape programs future activities by the hour, day, week, month or year. The woman interviewed in 1990 described her time frame simply as the present.
Step 4: picture it finished and let it fill your awareness
According to the report, you concentrate on the desired objective, then extend your perception of it into the whole of your expanded consciousness, holding it as a matter of established achievement. The Mobius West sheet puts the same idea in everyday terms: see the task completed in the perfect way at the time of your choosing. Popular teachers add detail and feeling and hold the picture as if it is here now, which goes beyond what the report specifies.
Step 5: project it, with your greater good in mind
After the picture is complete, the report says you project it into the universe with the intention that the objective is already established and will be realized in its time frame. The 1990 interviewee adds a clause of her own, holding in mind that the outcome will be for her greater good, and the Institute's group meditation states its aim as new beneficial patterns. The sources give no required wording, so the phrasing is yours.
Step 6: release, return and note what you did
The Institute's patterning meditation ends with a deep breath, a release and a return to normal consciousness. A group program described in the Hemi-Sync Journal in 1994 encouraged participants to use Problem Solving and One Month Patterning on their own over the following weeks and to record their insights. A written note of the objective, the date and the time frame gives you something concrete to check against when the period ends.
The report's explanation: holograms of thought
McDonnell's reasoning runs like this. Consciousness is the source of all reality, so thoughts projected with enough intensity can influence how reality develops in time and space for the person thinking them. A thought pattern formed in expanded awareness creates a hologram of the desired situation. Once that hologram is established in the universe it interacts with the universal hologram and can bring about an outcome that might not otherwise occur. The report itself says the methodology rests on a belief.
The built-in brake: complexity takes time
The report qualifies its own claim. The more complicated the objective, and the more radically it departs from current reality, the more time the universal hologram needs to reorient. Monroe trainers caution against forcing the pace, because someone might succeed in dislocating their existing reality with drastic consequences. A modern Gateway teacher makes the point with a billion-dollar company: patterning to be its CEO would require so many things to move so quickly that unexpected consequences would be certain.
In their own words
Quotes are checked word for word against the recordings and documents they come from. Bracketed words correct transcription errors; “…” marks an omission.
“This technique involves use of the consciousness to achieve desired objectives in the physical, emotional, or intellectual sphere. It involves concentration on the desired objective while in a Focus 12 state, extension of the individual's perception of that objective into the whole expanded consciousness, and its projection into the universe with the intention that the desired objective is already a matter of established achievement which is destined to be realized within the time frame specified.”
“However, the more complicated the [objective] sought and the more radically it departs from our current reality, the more time the universal hologram will need to reorient our reality sphere to accommodate our desires. Monroe trainers caution against attempting to force the pace of this process because the individual could succeed in dislocating his existing reality with drastic consequences.”
“Since Mobius West is for patterning, I use it like a “lens” to focus my intention to get up and be able to walk. I give the Command for Relax and then do “Plus-Change, Change” while concentrating on the desired outcome. The time frame is the present. I hold in mind that the outcome will be for my greater good. The effect is to help me “marshal my forces.””
“So we skip that one, and we skip One Month Patterning, because One Month Patterning, I tell them, is: you really have to know what you want to be. Because when you start programming, and that One Month Patterning, that's probably what you're going to be. So think about it. So those are two tapes that we encourage them to take home and work with.”
“To program, generally or in detail, any or all future activities by the hour, day, week, month or year. Use to set the tone of the total self — mental, physical, emotional — in order to maximize personal performance in probable or desired future events.”
“As with all patterns, they must evolve over time to remain relevant, to remain productive. We are going to engage in a brief patterning meditation. Underneath will be the Monroe Audio Support Vibrations for creativity and manifestation. Prepare yourself by closing your eyes and getting comfortable in your chair. While you are doing that, consider that now is the time for us to establish new beneficial patterns. First, for ourselves, to assist everyone here and those you touch with the resonant field generated by us today. And, second, to elevate the Monroe Institute's effectiveness in the global awakening of human consciousness.”
“Let's say you wanted to pattern being the CEO of a [billion-dollar] company that doesn't exist. Do you know how many things would have to move around to make that happen? Company have to be created. Tons of employees have to be hired, products, services, marketing—all sorts of things would have to happen in a very short, quick amount of time. And if you did it with enough intensity and you really just forced this thing to happen, we're not saying it couldn't happen. We're just saying it would definitely have unexpected consequences, because you're creating lots of waves and ripples.”
Important things to consider
Keep the theory and the practice apart
The hologram model is one officer's explanation, and the report itself describes the method as based on a belief. Neither the report nor the participant accounts in the archive is a controlled test of whether patterning changes events outside the person doing it. You can run the exercise as focused goal-setting without accepting the theory, and judge it by what you notice and what you do afterward.
Start small, specific and near
The report's own logic favors modest objectives, since complicated or distant ones need more time. The Institute's examples are a job change, a strained relationship and a postponed task, not a life overhaul. A good first objective is something you could check within the month, such as holding a difficult conversation calmly, and for which you can also name the ordinary actions you will take.
Choose an outcome you would accept
Programming a month or a year of your life is not trivial: the 1993 presenter warned that what you rehearse is probably what you will become. The 1990 interviewee held her outcome in mind as being for her greater good, and a modern teacher advises keeping it positive. If an objective would come at someone else's expense, or you would regret getting it, choose a different one.
Do not force the pace
The report's warning is about haste: trying to drive a large change quickly. In everyday terms, do not escalate the intensity, repeat the exercise obsessively or stack bigger objectives when a small one has not moved. Set the objective, release it and give the stated time frame room before you judge.
Pair it with action and a record
Patterning is described as setting direction, not replacing effort. Note the objective, the date, the time frame and the steps you actually took, then review at the end. A record shows whether results arrived for ordinary reasons, such as choices you made while the picture was fresh, and it keeps you from remembering only the hits.
Health goals need ordinary care
People have used patterning tapes with health-related intentions, and a 1990 Hemi-Sync Journal interview describes one such use. Those are personal reports, not treatments. Keep following your clinician's advice, and talk to your clinician before changing any care because of an exercise.
Be wary of sales language
Some online material presents patterning as proof that reality is programmable, or promises specific results from a course. The sources here are more restrained: a report that frames the method as belief-based, adds time and complexity limits and warns against forcing results, and participants who describe focus and effort.
Common questions
What is patterning in the Gateway Experience?
Patterning is a Focus 12 exercise in which you choose a desired objective, hold it in your expanded awareness as already achieved, and project it with the intention that it will be realized within a set time. The objective can be physical, emotional or intellectual. Threshold includes One Month Patterning, Adventure includes One Year Patterning, and the Institute's Human Plus series has a tape called Mobius West for the same purpose. The 1983 Army assessment lists it as the second of the Focus 12 tools, and a popular Gateway teacher describes it as a form of manifestation.
How do you do patterning, step by step?
The sources describe six moves. One, reach Focus 12 through the usual Gateway opening and count. Two, choose a single objective and be sure you want it. Three, set a time frame: a month and a year are built into the albums, and the 1990 interviewee used the present. Four, concentrate on the objective and picture it as already accomplished, letting that picture fill your whole expanded awareness. Five, project it with the intention that it is established and will be realized in its time, holding in mind that it is for your greater good. Six, release, breathe, return to normal waking awareness and write down what you did. No source gives a required script, so wording and imagery are yours.
What did the 1983 CIA Gateway report say about patterning?
The assessment by Lt. Col. Wayne McDonnell, dated June 9, 1983 and approved for release by the CIA in 2003, lists patterning as the second Focus 12 technique. It defines the exercise as using consciousness to achieve a desired objective in the physical, emotional or intellectual sphere: you concentrate on the objective in Focus 12, extend it into your whole expanded consciousness and project it with the intention that it is already established and destined to be realized in the specified time. McDonnell explains this with holograms, then adds that complicated objectives take longer and that Monroe trainers caution against forcing the pace, because someone might dislocate their existing reality with drastic consequences.
Is patterning the same as manifestation or the law of attraction?
One popular Gateway teacher says yes in everyday language, calling patterning a form of manifestation. The Institute itself uses the word for the Monroe Audio Support sound it plays under a group patterning meditation, and the Exploring album includes an exercise called Mission 15 Creation and Manifestation, though the publisher does not describe that exercise as patterning. The difference lies in the specifics. Patterning is a defined exercise done in Focus 12, with a stated time frame, a goal held as already established and a built-in caution against forcing results, and the 1983 report explains it with a holographic model rather than a law of attraction.
Does patterning actually work?
The sources contain individual reports and one officer's theoretical analysis. They do not contain a controlled test of whether patterning changes events outside the person doing it. Participants such as the 1990 interviewee describe it as a way to focus intention and marshal their forces, which you can judge from the inside by how clearly you define a goal and what you do next. The report claims more, that thoughts projected with adequate intensity can influence reality, but it presents that as a consequence of its model. If you try it, write down the objective, date and time frame, take ordinary action, and check honestly at the end.
Which Gateway tape teaches patterning?
The home albums teach it in Threshold as One Month Patterning, the third exercise after Introduction to Focus 12 and Problem Solving. Adventure continues with One Year Patterning. Outside the Gateway albums, the Human Plus tape Mobius West is described by the Institute as an exercise to learn to program your future by the hour, day, week, month or year. The 1983 assessment describes patterning as one of the tools taught in the Institute's roughly seven days of Gateway training.
