The Institute's Human Plus tape-taking pamphlet suggests using the exercises at the same time each day and keeping a journal of date and time, body position, medication or unusual diet, mood and energy level. Masluk's participants said that integrating an experience took active engagement afterward: discussing it with trusted people, reading about similar experiences, writing about it. Trainers warn that some impressions only surface later, so a note made straight after the return count helps. Read the 1983 Army report as an outsider's analysis The assessment released through the CIA reading room is an Army officer's attempt to explain Gateway in the language of physics, biomedicine and the holographic universe. It is an analysis, not a training manual, and some of its descriptions differ from the Institute's present wording: it casts Focus 15 as travel into the past and Focus 21 as the future, where the Institute teaches no time and the bridge. It also guesses that fewer than five percent of participants fully reach Focus 15 in a week. What the evidence supports

Most published evidence comes from the Institute's own journal and seminars: small EEG studies, practitioner case reports and surveys such as Masluk's, which rests on volunteers' self-reports with no comparison group. A.J. Honeycutt told a 2014 Institute seminar that there is plenty of anecdotal information but little on the building blocks of how it works, and invited grounded research. Reports of contact with guides or the dead are reports; this site presents them with their sources. What is the Gateway Experience? It is the Monroe Institute's training program for guided awareness, created by Robert Monroe. A recording of Monroe's voice, and in later albums A.J. Honeycutt's, leads you through a preparation, then Hemi-Sync tones support you in reaching states named Focus 10, 12, 15, 21 and beyond. Each exercise has a purpose: relaxing with awareness, solving a problem, patterning a desired outcome, balancing the body with color, or exploring on your own in an unguided free flow. The home version is eight albums called Waves; the residential and online versions teach the same tools with trainers or video guidance. Monroe's only stated dogma was that you are more than your physical body, offered as a premise to test rather than a belief to adopt. What is the difference between the Gateway Experience, Gateway Voyage and Gateway Voyage Online?

Gateway Experience names the eight-album home series. Gateway Voyage is the residential program in Virginia and elsewhere, currently five days and six nights or in split weekends, and also taught as a live virtual retreat. Gateway Voyage Online, launched in 2026, is a self-paced course of 23 guided sessions with video introductions, journaling prompts and community discussion, using remastered audio with Monroe's voice. All three teach Focus 10, 12, 15 and 21; the home series goes further, to Focus 27. The Institute's president at the time said the live program has been refined over the years, so the exercises are not identical. The Institute describes the residential Gateway Voyage as a prerequisite for many of its advanced programs. How many Waves are there, and do I have to take them in order? The publisher lists eight: Discovery, Threshold, Freedom, Adventure, Exploring, Odyssey, Voyager and Union. Monroe voices the first four and A.J. Honeycutt the last four. Each album comes with a guidance manual and six exercises, except Union, which has eight. The publisher says the albums must be used in sequence because each builds on the tools of the previous ones, and Institute staff say the same when introducing the later Waves. Discovery, the first, teaches Focus 3 and Focus 10. Older articles sometimes number individual exercises differently, so check an album against the publisher's current list. The gateway-waves page goes through every exercise.
