IDEAS IN CONVERSATION · EDITORIAL GUIDE

Guidance and personal discovery

Read the exchange about counsel, authority, and the limits of what a guide can do for someone else.

The guidance discussion in Explorer #6 turns on a small phrase: the speaker says he is not allowed to tell Monroe exactly what will occur. Monroe asks what that restriction means. The answer develops into an account of counsel, personal discovery and relationship.

Monroe presses for clarification

The speaker labeled MIRANON offers guidance and insight, then says that he cannot tell Monroe exactly what will happen. Monroe picks up on “allowed” and asks whether this means permission.

The response brings in the idea of authority: people having power over other people. Reading the question with the answer matters here. It shows the conversation working toward a distinction instead of leaving the initial restriction unexplained.

MIRANON: I can offer you guidance and give you insight as to what will happen, or in giving you guidance as to what can be done with individual people... but I cannot tell you... I am not allowed to tell you exactly what will occur...

Help leaves room for personal discovery

The next response describes the restriction as coming from the speaker’s own self. It then uses the image of a veil: a guide can indicate a corner and help lift it, while the person must make the opening for themselves.

Read as a statement about guidance, the metaphor places a limit on what counsel can accomplish on another person’s behalf. The source offers an image of assistance that leaves the act of discovery with the person receiving it.

MIRANON: Now, here, we understand that each person within himself knows what can be done, what is wise to be done. And when I say I am not allowed to tell, it is my own self that does not allow it to happen. It is... you must tear the veil for yourself... I can show you the corner of the veil, and I can help you lift it, but I cannot tear it open for you. I am here to give you what counsel I can...

Guidance is described through relationship

The following passage develops a more expansive account. It describes a guide as closely related to the person and connects guidance with bringing separated parts back together. Those claims belong to the source’s model of the self.

The edited transcript also preserves the language of helping with the veil and having a close relationship. Its speaker label is SHE. Comparing the versions keeps the shared idea visible while showing how attribution and wording differ.

EXPLORER 6 50 There is an interesting concept that I have been working with, penetrating into Leona's concept, into her mind, on the pur- pose of guidance and the purpose of counsel... I have said earlier that I am part of Leona. Any guide that can make contact must be a part, must have a close relationship with the person with whom he is making contact. This is very hard to explain... There are guides for every person. We have all split in many ways, and yet, we must all come back together before this phase is over. And the guides who have gone a little farther —that is not a good word either because it is all the same distance; or progress is not relative on my plane— but we must all reach a point where we can come back together, and my purpose now is to gather up the other parts of myself, and help as I can for them to see. Leona has five guides working with her.

The exchange is most informative when read as a sequence: a claim, Monroe’s challenge, a clarification, and an image of what assistance can and cannot do. The passages below preserve that sequence for closer reading.
