A STARTING POINT FOR LISTENERS

Hemi-Sync & the Gateway tapes

Heard about the “Gateway tapes”? Start with what they are, how the names fit together, and where to hear an introduction.

THE AUDIO METHOD

What is Hemi-Sync?

Hemi-Sync is the audio-guidance technology developed by Robert Monroe, and the name of the company publishing these recordings. Its catalog includes guided exercises and music intended to support different states of awareness.

The name refers to hemispheric synchronization. The publisher describes a method using sound patterns, including binaural beats, created by presenting different frequencies to each ear.

Gateway is one program in that wider catalog. A Hemi-Sync music album, a guided meditation and a Gateway exercise can be different listening experiences.

THE HOME TRAINING SERIES

What are the Gateway tapes?

The Gateway Experience is a sequence of guided Hemi-Sync exercises for exploring awareness. The albums are called Waves, beginning with Discovery. Each Wave comes with a guidance manual and builds on earlier exercises.

Orientation is the opening exercise. It introduces Focus 3; later Discovery exercises develop Focus 10. One introductory recording is only the beginning of the series.

FROM THE MONROE INSTITUTE

Expand: Beyond Meditation

Expand is the Institute’s meditation app, with guided audio featuring Monroe Sound Science and a customizable listening timer. It offers another way to explore Monroe’s audio alongside the Hemi-Sync releases below.

The app is free to download, with a paid subscription for the full meditation library and premium features. Downloading Expand does not enroll you in Gateway Voyage. Check the official app page for current access and download options.

Loading the player connects to Spotify. It may offer a preview or ask you to sign in. This is one introductory exercise, not the complete Gateway series.

Listings checked September 12, 2026. Catalogs and access can change. A streaming listing does not establish free access to the full program. The complete series is a paid offering ↗

For listening setup, Hemi-Sync recommends headphones for its experiential exercises and says not to listen while driving or operating heavy equipment. Read the publisher’s listening guidance ↗

Gateway Experience and Gateway Voyage

Gateway Experience is the Hemi-Sync home audio series described above. Gateway Voyage is a Monroe Institute training program with its own course formats. A course, its exercises and a commercial album are not interchangeable editions.

Gateway exercises and the Explorer recordings

Gateway exercises guide the listener through a practice. The Explorer recordings preserve participants describing their perceptions to a monitor. The archive lets you study those conversations and their transcripts as accounts in their own right.
