The M Band
The M Band is Robert Monroe's name for the part of the energy spectrum that carries thought. In Far Journeys (1985) he defines it as a band apart from electromagnetic energy and pairs it with a second term, M-band noise, the disturbance caused by uncontrolled thought. In Ultimate Journey (1994) the idea widens into the M-field, a broad field of energy that, he writes, works both inside and outside time-space, is present in all matter, and is what living things use to communicate. The I-There itself, he adds, is made of nothing but M-field energy.
Monroe picked the letter on purpose. In a Gateway talk dated October 1990 he told the group that the physical universe sits inside this field without being made of it, and that M was one of the few letters that did not already mean something else. In a Wednesday-night Gateway Voyage talk he said the M field is what participants were being exposed to: an energy that is not physical but has a language all its own, with nonverbal communication and dreams as familiar signs of it.
The other half of the idea is noise. Monroe described the thought and emotion radiating from living beings, above all humans, as a mass of disorganized energy that he named the H band noise. It is loudest near its source and thins with distance, and he said you have to get above it, to where it thins out, before you can perceive clearly. His books present the ability to shut out unwanted thought radiation as a skill that can be learned.
Monroe's name for the energy band that carries thought and mind-to-mind communication, and for the 'noise' of uncontrolled human thought that clutters it.
Key points
A band of the spectrum used for thought
In Far Journeys Monroe supplies a short vocabulary for rendering non-physical exchanges on the page, since ordinary verbs such as said or walked do not apply. The M-band entry describes the portion of the energy spectrum used for thought, and says it is not electromagnetic, electrical, magnetic or nuclear. Its companion, M-band noise, is the disturbance caused by uncontrolled thought. The same list defines ident, rote and percept. It is shorthand for the medium that mind-to-mind contact travels through, not a technical specification.
From M-band to M-field
Ultimate Journey speaks mostly of the M-field and offers its fullest account as a condensed translation of material Monroe received. There the field is the one form of energy that works both inside and outside time-space, present in all matter and concentrating in living organisms. He calls one band life, an acronym for layered intelligence-forming energy, counts thought among its most used applications, and places love in a band next to thought.
The physical universe sits inside it
In the October 1990 talk Monroe drew the physical universe as inserted into the M-field but not made of it, and added that it might be a hologram, who knows. He said the field has carried many labels through history and that M was simply a letter without another meaning. He also described a mirror-image universe of opposite polarity, plus one against minus one, and told listeners to go and find that out for themselves.
How living things communicate
Ultimate Journey says all living organisms use the M-field to communicate and that animals are more aware of it than humans, who mostly have no awareness at all. Speech, writing and touch are time-space forms humans added on top. People still receive M-field input from one another without either side knowing, and during sleep they operate in the field at a looser phase relationship to the physical, though most are too busy coping there to notice.
M-band noise and the H band
Monroe's name for the combined thought radiation of living beings, above all humans, is the H band. In a Wednesday-night Gateway talk he called it H band noise because it is not organized. Ultimate Journey adds that the volume of each part follows the emotion behind the thought, and that the band acts like a reflective layer around Earth, best crossed quickly, like pushing through a shouting crowd. His Inspec contact met him just beyond it, in quieter territory.
Noise as hazard and lure in Far Journeys
In an episode of Far Journeys told in Monroe's compressed non-physical vocabulary, two visitors on a sightseeing trip past Earth are warned to expect harsh M-band radiation. One finds it unbearable. The other is fascinated by the force and variety of human thought and wants to try being human, at least for a while. The noise is both what repels and what attracts.
A language of its own: rote, ident, percept
Monroe says the M-field carries communication that does not go through words. In Far Journeys a rote is a thought ball, one packet holding knowledge, memory and experience; an ident is a being's energy-pattern name or address; a percept is an insight or intuition; and a click marks an instant change of state. In a Gateway talk he told participants the M field has its own language and offered dreams as the familiar example.
Reception is a matter of phase
If everyone's thought radiation arrived at full strength we would be overwhelmed, Monroe writes; phase relationships prevent it. Your awareness is tuned to only some of the radiation, and where nothing lines up there is no reception. Shutting off the thought form that lines up with unwanted radiation stops its influence, and such methods can be learned, often painfully. Group emotion is the exception: its amplitude makes it highly contagious. Most human M-field energy, he adds, is not love and light, so a kind of shielding develops on its own.
Why the Focus levels are called phases
Monroe's language for the Focus levels is the same radio-style vocabulary. In a 1990 Wednesday-night talk he told participants that the more you develop the phase relationship, the less hold the physical discriminator has on you. At Focus 10 you begin to enter another phase, he said, and 12, 15 and 21 are different phases. The recurring difficulty is that non-physical perception gets translated into physical terms such as seeing and hearing.
In their own words
Quotes are checked word for word against the recordings and documents they come from. Bracketed words correct transcription errors; “…” marks an omission.
“Think of this as the physical universe, here, and that it was inserted into this energy field. But it is not this energy field, and we call it the M-field, because that’s one of the few letter[s] we could find that didn’t have some other meaning. And it’s been called things through history. All sorts of labels have been put on this field. … And that physical universe is a hologram? Who knows. It is not of this M-field energy, that’s the important thing.”
“And this is what you're being exposed to … what I call this M field of energy, which is not physical but has its language all its own. You've all encountered dream material; that is a definite pattern of activity. And you try to understand and, quote, interpret your dream. From my perspective, that is this other method of communication, trying to get something across, to use that word.”
“I call it the H band noise. And the reason I call it that is because this is not organized. Thought radiation. It's the most vigorous [disorganized] junk you ever heard. … In other words, where it … follows that inverse square law, or seems to anyway, so appears softer and weaker, you can then perceive it a lot better. You get out of it.”
“A big mass of disorganized stuff, and that disorganized stuff [is human] thought. You would be amazed the depth of disorganization that you find in it when you view it from another perspective. Be that as it may, with all the stuff … of which humans think and the mix of it that radiates out—wham, wham, wham, whip, like that—and there is an inverse square law at work, I hope, but we're not sure. On the other side of the coin is that eternal M field that comes down through here, like this, and radiates through there.”
“The biggest problem, of course, [with] that type of consciousness is that you're getting also into other means of perception that are non-physical. And we immediately attempt to translate them into physical interpretations, or like seeing, hearing and so on. And you do gradually get past that. And we also tend to translate these in terms of, of physical artifacts or our physical matter shapes.”
Important things to consider
A model borrowed from radio, not a measured field
Monroe describes the M-field in the language of bands, sidebands, amplitude and receptors. It is a descriptive model built from his non-physical experience and from information he says he received there. Nothing in his books or talks reports a measurement of an M-field, and it is not part of accepted physics. Treat it as a map of what Monroe reported, and take his own advice: go find out for yourself.
One idea, several names
Far Journeys says M-band; the Gateway talks and Ultimate Journey say M field or M-field; the human portion is the H band. Transcripts also run it together as Mband or mfield, so search for each spelling.
Separate the M-field from the sound and the brainwaves
Hemi-Sync works on the brain's electrical rhythms; the M-field is Monroe's name for the non-physical energy he said the Focus states open up. The sound is the method, the field is the claimed territory. Keep them apart when reading both the technical Hemi-Sync material and Monroe's accounts.
Retellings blur three different things
Video commentary often equates the M band with a haunted ring around Earth. Monroe's texts separate three things: the M-field itself, meaning all non-physical energy including the I-There; the H band, the layer of human thought noise near Earth; and post-death locales such as the belief system territories, which he places in parts of the M-field spectrum next to Earth. Keep them apart when comparing sources.
Expect translation errors
Monroe's warning is that perceptions beyond the physical arrive without physical senses, so the mind translates them into seeing, hearing and the shapes of physical objects. When Explorers report voices, pictures or colors, hold the details loosely and look for what repeats across reports.
No health guidance
Ultimate Journey claims that emotional thought radiation can influence the body, with results ranging from good health to illness. These are Monroe's claims, not medical guidance, and nothing on this page should change how you handle a health concern. Speak with a clinician about any symptom.
Common questions
What is the M Band?
The M Band is Robert Monroe's name for the part of the energy spectrum that carries thought and mind-to-mind communication. He introduced it in Far Journeys as one entry in a short vocabulary for describing non-physical exchanges: a band separate from electromagnetic energy, used for thought. In Ultimate Journey the idea broadens into the M-field, a field of energy that works both inside and outside time-space, is present in all matter, and is what living things use to communicate. Monroe explained in a Gateway talk that the physical universe sits inside this field without being made of it, and that he used the letter M because it had no other meaning.
What is M-band noise?
M-band noise is the disturbance caused by uncontrolled thought. In Far Journeys it is the harsh background that visitors to Earth feel as human thought. In Ultimate Journey Monroe names the strongest, human part of it the H band: the peak of disorganized thought radiating from living beings, loudest where emotion is strongest. In a Gateway talk he called it H band noise because it is not organized, and said it follows something like an inverse square law, so it grows softer with distance and you can perceive better once you get out of it. He describes crossing it quickly, as you would a shouting crowd.
Is the M Band the same as the M-field?
Mostly yes. They are the same idea at two levels of detail. M-band is the term from Far Journeys, where it means the part of the spectrum used for thought. M-field is the term Monroe uses in his later talks and in Ultimate Journey for the broad field of energy that includes thought as one band, life as another and love as a third next to thought. The H band is the portion produced by human thought and emotion, the noisy layer near Earth. So M-band can mean thought energy in particular, while M-field means the whole medium, including everything non-physical Monroe described, such as the I-There.
How does the M Band relate to nonverbal communication and rote?
In Monroe's account they fit together. The M-field is the medium, nonverbal communication is what travels through it, and a rote is the unit it travels in. In a Gateway Voyage talk he said participants were being exposed to an energy that is not physical but has a language of its own, and he pointed to dreams as a familiar sample of it, a definite pattern of activity trying to get something across. In Far Journeys a rote is a thought ball, a packet of knowledge, memory and experience delivered whole, while ident and percept name the address and the insight.
What does the M Band have to do with the Focus levels?
Monroe talked about the Focus levels as phases in a changing phase relationship with the physical. In a 1990 Gateway Voyage talk he told participants that the more you develop that relationship, the less hold the physical discriminator has: at Focus 10 you begin to enter another phase, and 12, 15 and 21 are different phases. He added that what participants were being exposed to was the M field, and that the main difficulty is translation: non-physical perception arrives and the mind immediately turns it into seeing and hearing.
Can you shield yourself from M-band noise?
Monroe wrote that you can, in principle, and that it is a matter of phase rather than force. Your awareness is tuned to only parts of the radiation around you, so shutting off the thought form that lines up with unwanted radiation ends its influence. He says such methods can be learned, often painfully, and that a kind of shielding develops automatically because most human M-field energy is not love and light. Group emotion is the hardest to resist because of its amplitude. He gives no step-by-step exercise for it.
Is the M-field real or measurable?
Monroe offered the M-field as a description drawn from experience, not as a laboratory result. He borrowed the vocabulary of radio because it fit what he reported. Nothing in the books or talks summarized here records a measurement of an M-field, and mainstream physics does not recognize one. In a Gateway talk he treated even basic questions, such as whether the physical universe is a hologram, as open: who knows. His standing invitation was to go find out for yourself and keep what you can verify.

Far Journeys. A short glossary defines M-band as the part of the spectrum used for thought, apart from electromagnetic energy, and M-band noise as disturbance from uncontrolled thought. It also defines ident, rote and percept so non-physical exchanges can be rendered as dialogue.
Far Journeys. In a story told in that compressed vocabulary, two visitors on a sightseeing trip past Earth are warned about harsh M-band radiation. One is repelled; the other is drawn to the force of human thought and wants to experience being human.
Ultimate Journey. The M-field is described as the one energy working inside and outside time-space, present in all matter and used by all life to communicate. The I-There is made solely of it, and reception of thought radiation depends on phase.
Ultimate Journey. The H band is the peak of uncontrolled thought from living beings, loudest where emotion is strongest. Monroe describes a reflective layer to cross quickly, with his Inspec contact waiting just beyond.
