In a radio interview Monroe described consciousness as a spectrum of phase relationships with time-space: inattention and daydreaming slightly out of phase, meditation partly phased into another reality system, deep delta sleep far out of phase, and death fully out of phase. In Ultimate Journey he defines Focus 21 as the edge of time-space, from which contact with other energy systems becomes possible, and the 2012 overview says the Gateway waves gradually increase the phase shift away from the physical. A meeting place between physical and non-physical Institute speakers present the bridge as a place of contact. A speaker in an Institute video called it the last vibratory state before you leave the physical universe: non-physical beings lower their vibratory rate, we raise ours, and the two meet at the bridge, including dead relatives and beings who have never been human. Scott Taylor calls it one of his favorite places to hang out and jokes that you will find him at the bridge cafe, under a yellow umbrella. Wave VI, Odyssey, puts Focus 21 on the home albums The publisher's guide describes Wave VI (Gate 6) as a self-discovery journey of high-adventure exercises in Focus 21, the bridge to other energy systems, exploring awareness beyond physical time-space. Its exercises are Sensing, Expansion, Point of Departure, Nonphysical Friends, Intro to Focus 21 and Free Flow Journey in Focus 21. A.J. Honeycutt voices it, and the albums are meant to be used in order.

Wave VII, Voyager, runs from the bridge to the afterlife levels The publisher says Wave VII (Gate 7) is based on the Institute's Lifeline program and focuses on being of service to self and others, with journeys to Focus 21 and Focus 23 through 27, which relate to afterlife states, and an aim of guiding people to a reception center. Exercises: Explore Total Self, Intro to Focus 23, Intro to Focus 25, Intro to Focus 27, Retrieval and Messages From Beyond. In a 2019 interview on its release, Honeycutt called Lifeline a graduate workshop for Gateway Voyage alumni. What Monroe said you meet first beyond it In a radio interview, asked about other worlds and other beings, Monroe said the first thing you encounter in the non-physical states of being is the belief system territories, where a person is attracted automatically after exit because the setting is familiar, and where the various religions each have a belief system. Beyond the bridge, the descriptions shift from states of awareness toward places and their inhabitants. The 1983 Army report called it the future

Lt. Col. Wayne McDonnell's 1983 Army assessment titles its section Focus 21: The Future, calling it the last and most advanced Gateway state, like Focus 15 but aimed at the future rather than the past, and probably attainable only after long meditation or sustained work with the tapes. Gateway participants who have read the report note that their programs described Focus 21 as a bridge between worlds, not as the future. Robert Monroe: “Now, from Focus 15, from Focus 15, you're going to move through the colors to the white of Focus 21. The white of Focus 21, which is a bridge to the energy systems. A bridge that can allow you to experience other realities. Move now to a pattern of blue in Focus 15. Beyond the blue. Beyond the blue of 15 to an expanded 15.” (Focus Levels - Seven Resonant Colors Described by Miranon — Focus Levels- Seven Resonant Colors Described by Miranon.pdf) “Focus 21, which your caller referred to, we call a bridge to other energy systems, to other non-physical realms where people can perhaps visit or gather information or get in touch with larger parts of themselves, or perhaps some people consider them things outside themselves.” (Art Bell, Dr. Robert Monroe & Skip Atwater - Out of Body Experience - Black Screen - Interview Only, 2025-07-15)
