Focus 21 The bridge: Monroe's edge of time-space, where he said you can contact other energy systems, and the starting point for the afterlife levels. Focus 21 is the state Robert Monroe placed at the edge of time-space, the point from which other energy systems can be contacted. The Institute calls it the bridge. In a meditation voiced by Monroe, the listener moves from Focus 15 through a sequence of colors to the white of Focus 21, a bridge to the energy systems that can allow you to experience other realities. On Art Bell's show an Institute guest described it as a bridge to other non-physical realms, where people can visit, gather information or get in touch with larger parts of themselves, or with what some people consider things outside themselves. In Monroe's phasing model, consciousness runs along a spectrum from being fully focused in time-space, through daydreaming, meditation and sleep, toward other energy systems. In Ultimate Journey he names Focus 21 the edge of time-space, the farthest level earlier Institute programs had reached, and presents Focus 22 and beyond as levels added for the Lifeline program. The Gateway Experience home albums introduce it on Wave VI, Odyssey. Wave VII, Voyager, built on the Institute's Lifeline program, covers Focus 21 through 27; the publisher says its journeys to Focus 23 through 27 relate to afterlife states.

Trainers and participants describe the bridge as a meeting place. Scott Taylor calls it the spot where communication can happen between physical and non-physical bodies, with loved ones or with beings who were never physical. Dr. Eben Alexander described floating off a white marble bridge into mist and coming down into a cafe in a gorge. The 1983 Army assessment framed the same state differently, as Focus 21: The Future, a label that Gateway participants on YouTube say their programs did not use. The edge of time-space Short descriptions of the main Gateway states, which a 2012 TMI Web Resources overview traces to Monroe's 1994 book, define Focus 21 as the edge of time-space, from which contact with other energy systems becomes possible. The overview adds that the level offers the opportunity to explore other realities and energy systems beyond what we call time-space-physical-matter. The wording describes a boundary and what lies across it. The bridge, in Monroe's own voice In a Monroe-voiced meditation transcribed in a compilation of focus-level descriptions, the listener is told to move from Focus 15 through the colors to the white of Focus 21, a bridge to the energy systems. The route runs beyond a pattern of blue in Focus 15, then red at Focus 16, yellow at 17 and rose at 18 on the way up. This meditation uses color as the way across. Focus 21 and Monroe's phasing model
In a radio interview Monroe described consciousness as a spectrum of phase relationships with time-space: inattention and daydreaming slightly out of phase, meditation partly phased into another reality system, deep delta sleep far out of phase, and death fully out of phase. In Ultimate Journey he defines Focus 21 as the edge of time-space, from which contact with other energy systems becomes possible, and the 2012 overview says the Gateway waves gradually increase the phase shift away from the physical. A meeting place between physical and non-physical Institute speakers present the bridge as a place of contact. A speaker in an Institute video called it the last vibratory state before you leave the physical universe: non-physical beings lower their vibratory rate, we raise ours, and the two meet at the bridge, including dead relatives and beings who have never been human. Scott Taylor calls it one of his favorite places to hang out and jokes that you will find him at the bridge cafe, under a yellow umbrella. Wave VI, Odyssey, puts Focus 21 on the home albums The publisher's guide describes Wave VI (Gate 6) as a self-discovery journey of high-adventure exercises in Focus 21, the bridge to other energy systems, exploring awareness beyond physical time-space. Its exercises are Sensing, Expansion, Point of Departure, Nonphysical Friends, Intro to Focus 21 and Free Flow Journey in Focus 21. A.J. Honeycutt voices it, and the albums are meant to be used in order.
