“Rita Warren, Research Director at The Monroe Institute, is a psychologist who received her doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley, and spent a number of years conducting research on juvenile offenders in California and served as Professor at the School of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York, Albany. Three years ago, she moved to the New Land in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains; since then, she and her staff have conducted over 800 sessions with more than 130 individuals in The Monroe Institute’s Research Laboratory.” (Magazine Article (Metapsychology) Explorer Session 1654 - Harold Wessbecher with Rita Warren — Magazine Article (Metapsychology) Explorer Session 1654 - Harold Wessbecher with Rita Warren.pdf) Nancy McMoneagle: “So after Bob left us, and March 17, 1995, Laurie very kindly came in and took over and was our director. And all of you who knew [Laurie] knew her spark, her vivacity; she had a youthfulness about her, a real go-getter type of energy. And bless her. She was here until, was it 2006, that she left us. And at that point, then I think Skip filled in, and Skip … had had that long, long relationship with Bob, with the Institute, for so many years.” (2014 Professional Seminar: TMI Past, Present and Future (Nancy McMoneagle) — 07 2014 Professional Seminar- Past, Present and Future (Nancy McMoneagle) (Transcript).pdf, 2014)

Nancy McMoneagle: “No dogma, with the exception of one thing: we do ask, of course, that people consider they are more than their physical bodies. And most people who are attracted to us would think that anyway.” (#16 - Nancy "Scooter" McMoneagle of the Monroe Institute, 2016-02-09) This site is independent Gateway Explorer is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Monroe Institute. It summarizes public recordings, journals and the Institute’s web pages. For current programs, dates, prices and applications, use the Institute’s own website and its trainers. Program details change Lengths, prices, formats and prerequisites change, and several programs require earlier ones. The details here reflect the Institute’s website in October 2026. Confirm with the Institute before planning anything, including whether you need to apply and which earlier program is required. Most research is the Institute’s own The Professional Division’s papers and the Hemi-Sync and TMI journals are produced by the Institute and its members. A 2008 report by the MESA Research Group looked at the effects of long-term participation, and the Institute lists current projects with partners such as the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies, but its research page mostly lists projects, links one study and summarizes no findings. Treat benefit claims as participant reports and early research, not settled outcomes. Health caution
The Institute advises anyone with a history of seizures, auditory disorders or adverse mental health conditions to consult a physician before using Monroe Sound Science. The programs are exploration and training, not medical treatment, and reports of healing or of contact with the deceased are personal accounts. Residential program versus home audio The Gateway Voyage is the residential program at the Institute, with virtual and online versions. The Gateway Experience is the home-study audio set. They share methods and a lineage but are separate products and are not interchangeable. What is the Monroe Institute? The Monroe Institute is a nonprofit education and research organization in Nelson County, Virginia, founded by Robert Monroe. It teaches people to explore expanded states of awareness using Hemi-Sync audio, which the Institute’s site also calls Monroe Sound Science: binaural-beat recordings that Monroe’s team developed. The Institute states its purpose as advancing the global awakening of human consciousness and its mission as helping people create more meaningful and joyful lives through guided exploration of expanded consciousness. Programs run on its Virginia campus, online and through certified trainers around the world. Monroe himself stressed that the Institute is the work of hundreds of people, not one man. Where is the Monroe Institute, and what is the campus like?
