There is research, but most of it is the Institute's own. The Hemi-Sync Journal and professional seminars carry EEG studies, practitioner case reports and participant surveys such as Masluk's, and Skip Atwater's lab has studied binaural beats. Independent controlled trials of the whole program are thin, and A.J. Honeycutt acknowledged in 2014 that the Institute has far more anecdote than explanation of how the sounds work. What can be said fairly is that the program is a structured, repeatable practice that many people report as useful and that Monroe presented as a set of tools to test, not a belief to accept. Journeys Out of the Body: Monroe's first book narrates the involuntary out-of-body experiences that began in the late 1950s and his early attempts to understand and control them. It is the background to the Institute, though Gateway itself does not require any such experience. Ultimate Journey: Monroe's last book lays out the Focus levels used in Gateway, from Focus 3 and Focus 10 through 12, 15 and 21, and carries the same map further toward Focus 27 and beyond.
