The Institute and its publisher describe it as safe for most people but advise anyone with a history of seizures, auditory disorders or adverse mental-health conditions, or who takes medications that affect relaxation, to talk with a physician first. Do not listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention, and stop if a track makes you uncomfortable. Monroe argued that because Hemi-Sync is only sound, the mind can accept or reject it. It is a relaxation and awareness practice, not a treatment, and this is not medical advice. What is Hemi-Sync used for? Mostly for guided exploration, relaxation, focus and sleep. In the Gateway Experience it carries the spoken exercises that teach Focus 10 and later states. Metamusic uses it under music for background listening, and Human Plus uses it to train cues. The publisher also lists titles for concentration and sleep. Atwater has said therapists, dentists and educators use it in their own work, the Hemi-Sync Journal printed reports from many fields, and the military piloted it for faster skills training in 1982. In these settings the evidence consists of reports and small studies, not established treatments. Far Journeys: Monroe describes how the lab turned to sound to hold subjects in a borderland state between waking and sleep, how that led to the frequency-following response, and how Hemi-Sync became the development that opened the rest of the work.

Journeys Out of the Body: Monroe dates the start of his story to spring 1958, when his experiments in learning during sleep, with himself as the main subject, were followed by his first unplanned episodes of vibration and separation from the body.
