Skip Atwater: “As many of you know, our product, our tapes, our experiences are very complex binaural beats. It isn't just one single tone … all throughout the tape. As you are guided to relax, it's one set of frequencies. As you are guided to do this now, it's another set of frequencies.” (2000 Professional Seminar: Neurological Adaptation to Binaural Beating (Skip Atwater) — 2000 Professional Seminar- Neurological Adaptation to Binaural Beating (Skip Atwater) (Transcript).pdf, 2000) Nancy Walter: “The brain just tunes it out. But with our new sound technology, we have designed using several different audio techniques, including binaural beats, phase modulation, and a 3D [soundscape] that actually does not elicit that habituated response any longer. Your brain is constantly looking for the changes in our signals. So it pays attention a lot stronger than it would if you were just listening to binaural beats.” (Researching Brain Coherence at the Monroe Institute with Nancy Walter, 2025-09-03) A.J. Honeycutt: “It's obvious to say that there are plenty of binaural beat producers out there these days. Many have rolled through the Institute, frankly, and it's understandable. We're not the only binaural beat restaurant in town. However, [Hemi-Sync] is our brand. It is … our restaurant. It's our food. It's what we create out of our kitchen.” (Hemi-Sync® Evolution by A.J. Honeycutt at the TMI Professional Seminar 2014, 2014-07-30)

Robert Monroe: “And that is that it is, it's not like a drug. It's not like a chemical. It is a sound. And as it, as a sound, it in turn doesn't invade the body, as it were. … What it also means is that the mind can accept it or reject it.” (Robert A. Monroe's OBE Paranormal Transformation of Human Consciousness (7 Videos) — Bob Monroe's OBE Paranormal Transformation of Human Consciousness 3 (Transcript).pdf) Headphones matter Hemi-Sync needs a separate signal in each ear, so use stereo headphones. The Institute's FAQ calls over-ear wired stereo headphones optimal but says any good-quality headphones or earbuds work, and that Bluetooth and noise cancelation do not interfere. Keep the volume comfortable and never listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention. Buy from the source The publisher warns that copies bought from third parties may be bootlegs with degraded audio and, in some cases, altered content. If you want the exercises as designed, buy them from the Institute or its authorized publisher rather than a file-sharing copy. A health caution

The Institute and its publisher advise people with a history of seizures, auditory disorders or adverse mental-health conditions, or who take medications that affect relaxation, to consult a physician before listening. Walter notes that some people are sensitive to certain sounds, and residential programs screen applicants. Hemi-Sync is presented as a relaxation and awareness practice, not a medical treatment. Responses differ Not everyone likes the sound. Walter says a small percentage of people respond poorly and has noticed that tracks heavy with fast gamma frequencies bother some of them. Campbell recalls that some early volunteers found the tapes annoying and a few lost consciousness entirely. Preferences vary, so try a different exercise or stop if a track makes you uncomfortable. Sound, state and program are different things Hemi-Sync names the audio method. A Focus number names a state taught in a program, and the exercise defines what you are asked to do. A Metamusic album with Hemi-Sync is not a Gateway exercise, and a plain binaural track is not Hemi-Sync. When you read an experience report, check which recording was used. What the evidence supports
