Atwater measured a faint EEG frequency-following response to pure binaural beats, then tested a 45-minute complex sequence on two groups of roughly 20 volunteers. The group hearing beats showed significant changes in occipital alpha and central delta in most recording periods; the group hearing the same tones without beats did not. A Duke-led study in Physiology & Behavior in 1998 found beta-range beats improved vigilance more than theta and delta beats. Most other Hemi-Sync studies are small pilots, many printed in the Institute's own journals. Robert Monroe: “It was very interesting, in as much as I was the CEO of the company. I was the one mostly filled with very deep interest in the project. So I became the chief subject. So I must have run 150 tests with these various sounds. These changes of consciousness in 1958 were a direct result of being the subject in all of that early sound experimentation. So that's how it all began.” (Introduction to Laurie Monroe / Bob Talk / Meditation (1995), 1995)

Robert Monroe: “In terms of the Hemi-Sync process itself, the Hemi-Sync process didn't really take place until the '70s. … I had accumulated about eight or nine different engineers and scientists and doctors in Virginia. And we, as a group—it was nothing, again, mystical or magical—we decided that would be the good way to do it, to create a binaural beat. And that's how Hemi-Sync was born.” (Robert A. Monroe's OBE Paranormal Transformation of Human Consciousness (7 Videos) — Bob Monroe's OBE Paranormal Transformation of Human Consciousness 2 (Transcript).pdf) Robert Monroe: “It's a special method that we didn't invent, what's called a [binaural] beat. But we did indeed use that as a system of a means of getting these low frequency vibrational patterns into the brain. … It puts a—say, a 100 hertz signal in one ear, which you can hear, and 104 hertz signal in the other ear, and the brain has to synthesize that four [hertz] differential. That's what a [binaural] beat is.” (Art Bell, Dr. Robert Monroe & Skip Atwater - Out of Body Experience - Black Screen - Interview Only, 2025-07-15) Tom Campbell: “We put together some binaural beat tapes. Dennis actually produced the first one, and we went out to experiment. So we started with that, and it worked so well that when Bob came back from another trip he was on, we told him about it. He listened to them.” (Remembering Robert Monroe and Journeys Out of the Body with Tom Campbell, author of My Big TOE, 2025-05-02)

Skip Atwater: “As many of you know, our product, our tapes, our experiences are very complex binaural beats. It isn't just one single tone … all throughout the tape. As you are guided to relax, it's one set of frequencies. As you are guided to do this now, it's another set of frequencies.” (2000 Professional Seminar: Neurological Adaptation to Binaural Beating (Skip Atwater) — 2000 Professional Seminar- Neurological Adaptation to Binaural Beating (Skip Atwater) (Transcript).pdf, 2000) Nancy Walter: “The brain just tunes it out. But with our new sound technology, we have designed using several different audio techniques, including binaural beats, phase modulation, and a 3D [soundscape] that actually does not elicit that habituated response any longer. Your brain is constantly looking for the changes in our signals. So it pays attention a lot stronger than it would if you were just listening to binaural beats.” (Researching Brain Coherence at the Monroe Institute with Nancy Walter, 2025-09-03) A.J. Honeycutt: “It's obvious to say that there are plenty of binaural beat producers out there these days. Many have rolled through the Institute, frankly, and it's understandable. We're not the only binaural beat restaurant in town. However, [Hemi-Sync] is our brand. It is … our restaurant. It's our food. It's what we create out of our kitchen.” (Hemi-Sync® Evolution by A.J. Honeycutt at the TMI Professional Seminar 2014, 2014-07-30)
