The pilot took place in an ordinary five-day, six-night Institute program with 14 participants: eight women and six men, ages 51 to 78. The questionnaire was given at the final debriefing. Seven of the 14 scored above 60 percent of the maximum on all four scales (mystical, positive mood, transcendence of time and space, and ineffability), the questionnaire's criterion for a complete mystical experience; two did not, and several came close. Lane cautioned that it was a small study with no experimental controls and that most participants were experienced with Institute programs. How SAM relates to Monroe Sound Science Monroe Sound Science is the Institute's current umbrella name for its sound technology. Its homepage says it uses binaural and multi-layered frequencies, and its Monroe Sound Science page lists Spatial Angle Modulation among its techniques, alongside binaural beats, isochronic tones and frequency modulation. In a conversation posted in 2026, Paul Citarella said the latest generation is built on a fully simulated 3D environment used for entrainment, without naming SAM. In 2012 and 2013 SAM was described as a complement to Hemi-Sync, so it is one named method under the umbrella, not a synonym for it.

Nancy McMoneagle: “We also have a technology and another one here at the Institute called SAM, which stands for spatial angle modulation, and it's different from binaural beats and that you're using a single tone, but again you're kind of moving it through spaces, where at least that's how it sounds.” (Show 11 Nancy McMoneagle Monroe Institute NDE OBE conciousness Sleep Astrological Hu, 2017-04-14) Skip Atwater: “Rather than Hemi-Sync’s binaural beating to achieve its effect, SAM uses a single frequency tone digitally movement-modulated for presentation in a stereophonic field. Using stereo headphones or speakers, the spatial angle of the apparent sound source moves more rapidly than the brain can process as a Doppler shift anomaly. As a result, the brain produces a modulation or change in the tone—a tremolo effect similar to binaural beating. It is this tremolo effect coupled with the size and orientation of the movement arc produced that give SAM its ability to influence regional brain activity and changes in states of consciousness.” (TMI Journal 2012 No. 1 — 1 TMI Journal 2012 No. 1.pdf, 2012) A.J. Honeycutt: “In this case it's Focus 10. This is [the] tried and true mix of delta and theta signals that have been relaxing people for years, and although not as sexy as the higher Focus levels, Focus 10 has been elegantly doing its job for about 40 years now.” (Hemi-Sync® Evolution by A.J. Honeycutt at the TMI Professional Seminar 2014, 2014-07-30)
Skip Atwater: “There is no supposition by The Monroe Institute that SAM entrains or drives brainwave arousal as in the binaural-beat model. We do, however, think that some objective evidence for SAM’s effectiveness in facilitating enhanced states of awareness will be shown in ongoing studies of gamma synchrony as an electrophysiological correlate of conscious awareness.” (TMI Journal 2012 No. 1 — 1 TMI Journal 2012 No. 1.pdf, 2012) James Lane: “I was looking for relaxation effects because my hope was we could use it in clinical settings like patient waiting rooms, where people are under a lot of stress: give them something that they could just use. And I have to admit I learned a lot from the three studies that I conducted, which [were] not really successful in the demonstration of powerful effects of SAM.” (SAM-supported mystical experiences at The Monroe Institute by James Lane, 2018-08-16) James Lane: “What I did was highlight in yellow when the score exceeded 60%, which was the criterion to be part of a complete mystical experience. So you could see, I hope, that out of the 14 people, seven people had a complete mystical experience, that their responses produce scores above that criterion on all four sub scales. And there were several other people who came pretty darn close to having a complete mystical experience, perhaps missing one or two sub scales.” (SAM-supported mystical experiences at The Monroe Institute by James Lane, 2018-08-16)
