[778.5-782.5] The interesting part about that is that you don't become the five-year-old child.
[782.8-789.4] You are added to it and you can perceive all of the thoughts, emotions and actions and
[789.4-795.1] motivations of that five-year-old and simply participate in that action without really
[795.1-796.7] being a part of the five-year-old.
[796.7-800.5] So it's not like hypnosis where you go back and become the five-year-old.
[800.5-804.7] This is the older you put on the younger you.
[804.7-805.7] That's one of the cases.
[805.7-808.5] Forward in time.
[808.5-813.1] We've had some very interesting experiments along that line.
[813.1-821.0] We hinge it very much on going to yourself when you are physically in existence, say, a
[821.0-824.5] year from now or two years from now or five years.
[824.5-830.8] And one of the interesting things we did in one of the one-year advances, this one
[830.8-838.0] experimenter or participant, found out in moving a year ahead in time, got nothing but a blank,
[838.0-842.0] couldn't find himself in that year ahead.
[842.0-843.0] Total blank.
[843.0-848.1] Well, we didn't know enough to ask the right questions, so he returned and came back
[848.1-850.0] into normal time.
[850.0-853.8] And a year later, he had died of a heart attack, so that's why he couldn't find
[853.8-857.2] himself in physical life.
[857.2-862.1] So in this out-of-body state, in this future or past time, is one actually
[862.1-866.0] experiencing it or observing it?
[866.0-871.5] Actually it is an observer status, but you are principally observing yourself.
[871.5-876.5] The experience, though, as an observer is a very, very profound and deep thing.
[876.5-883.4] When I say observe, this means that you observe, slash, experience all the
[883.4-889.0] emotions and all of the events of that period without being a part of it.
[889.0-895.0] But you do experience all the motivations and the thoughts and so on.
[895.0-897.3] Absolutely fascinating.
[897.3-901.5] Are there any new areas in connection with the out-of-body travel which you think should
[901.5-902.5] be explored?
[902.5-910.6] Well, there are so many things that need exploration in it because it's a thing that in the last
[910.6-913.6] 20 years has become quite acceptable.
[913.6-920.9] 20 years ago, I would not have all conceived of the thought that the American Psychiatric
[920.9-929.4] Association would permit official papers on the subject to be read at their national
[929.4-933.9] convention, but this took place a couple of years ago.
[933.9-939.2] This was a breakthrough in the psychiatric field that they would even consider that
[939.2-945.9] something like this was something other than an hallucination.
[945.9-950.3] So the changes are in effect.
[950.3-957.8] The out-of-body state is a normal, natural state from our perspective.
[957.8-962.7] Our perspective says that you do this every night when you go to sleep, and indeed, dealt
[962.7-965.5] to sleep, you are out of your physical body.
[965.5-969.3] The fact that you don't remember it does not mean that it doesn't exist.
[969.3-974.5] So there may well be a primary reason why you do this, and this is all tied up in the
[974.5-981.5] mysteries of sleep, which we as a culture are now finally exploring with some great
[981.5-984.0] degree of seriousness, I hope.
[984.0-995.1] The out-of-body state in and of itself, its most profound answer that it gives is the fact
[995.1-1001.2] that you begin to know, not believe, not hope, or whatever, that you do survive physical
[1001.2-1006.3] death, that such survival is as natural as being born.
[1006.3-1012.3] It's not a thing that you have to perform certain functions in order to survive physical
[1012.3-1013.3] death.
[1013.3-1016.8] No matter what you do, when you live here physically, you're going to survive.
[1016.8-1019.7] You may not think you do, but you do.
[1019.7-1025.1] And that survival is not contingent upon any religious beliefs, any cultural beliefs.
[1025.1-1026.5] You just simply survive.
[1026.5-1032.3] Well, Mr. Monroe, I'm sure many of us would like to have that knowledge as opposed to
[1032.3-1033.3] the beliefs.
[1033.3-1039.4] Can you describe how you teach people to experience the out-of-body state?
[1039.4-1045.6] We have evolved a system over the last 10 or 15 years that what we call our gateway
[1045.6-1052.2] program, and this is conducted at our center in Virginia, and also we have a system where
[1052.2-1056.6] you can begin to apply it at home.
[1056.6-1065.2] This system utilizes a very simple method of helping the brain synchronize the left
[1065.2-1068.0] and right half of the brain.
[1068.0-1074.0] That synchronization helps you explore yourself more deeply, which in turn lets you begin to
[1074.0-1080.4] perceive the energy, the raw energy that is you, and second, learn how to control it,
[1080.4-1082.6] and third, how to utilize it.
[1082.8-1087.8] Now, one of the ways that you can utilize such energy is to move into the out-of-body
[1087.8-1089.1] state.
[1089.1-1093.8] However, I think the first thing you need to know is why you want to do this.
[1093.8-1097.9] Why do you want to achieve the out-of-body state?
[1097.9-1103.1] If you want to achieve it on a permanent way, you just take a gun and put it to your head.
[1103.1-1107.0] It is much like saying, oh, I would like to drive that car.
[1107.0-1108.0] Fine.
[1108.0-1110.5] I hand you the keys to the car.
[1110.5-1117.0] Then you have to know where you're going to go and why you're going to go.
[1117.0-1123.0] Once you know that, then there is a very definitive purpose for having the car.
[1123.0-1129.9] In our training sessions, this is basically what we teach, the understanding and control
[1129.9-1133.9] and utilization of such energy.
[1133.9-1140.0] If you're at all interested in this particular field, I suggest you tell us about your experiences.
[1140.0-1141.8] You'd be interested in them.
[1141.8-1149.4] It simply adds to our research base when we hear of people who have had out-of-body experiences.
[1149.4-1156.8] One way you can reach us is by simply writing me, Robert Monroe, Monroe Institute at Faber,
[1156.8-1157.8] Virginia.
[1157.8-1159.9] That's spelled F as in Frank.
[1159.9-1163.1] A-B-E-R, Virginia, 22938.
[1163.1-1164.5] All right.
[1164.5-1171.3] Well, thank you very, very much, Mr. Monroe, for taking this time with us today.
[1171.3-1174.9] It's been a fascinating experience and I'm sure people would like to learn more about
[1174.9-1175.9] this.
[1175.9-1176.9] Thank you again.
[1176.9-1177.3] I enjoyed being here.
