you get this going. And then we're not in Peoria and the other Sonic instruments that are used as the rattle, which which doesn't have the same frequencies and much higher frequency. Other Other cultures will use like the Tibetan bowl satellite, rather than use the bowls. In the Australian Australian aborigine joining us live didgeridoo, the down in the Amazon, they have something called a musical bowl, which is the sort of deep twining thing that they use. So, so one way of beginning to alter consciousness through the millennia has been the sonic driving. Another one would be any kind of state of deprivation, whether it's fasting, as you see here, this the Native American sweat lodge, or even to the extremes of fasting, the sweat lodge. And the this is, this is an example of the Sundance that still done and out outing in the Native American culture. Where what happens is that the the person going through this opens and asked to be used on behalf of the community. And so once more of you get that sense of, of, we're all in this together and I am. I am here to be of service and healing to my community. The business is a Russian shaman who is using the emanate a mushroom. And according to Michael Horner, who is the anthropologist who's pulled together a lot of what he calls cross cultural or core shamanism. Only about 10% of shamanic societies actually work with psychotropic plants. The mushroom is one, we have peyote in Mexico, in the United States, they have Ayahuasca down in South America. But I think all of you think TMI through into the other forms that you might be involved in know that, that taking a psychotropic substance is not necessary is not the only way to alter consciousness. Stan Grof, actually, a psychiatrist from Czechoslovakia, and several decades ago did a lot of studies on he was trying to map non ordinary reality and used LSD and then found a tremendous number of similarities. After you get past the ego stuff in your basic psychological issues. What we get moving to transpersonal states is surprisingly similar. And he looked at hundreds and hundreds of folks who used to be LSD in a controlled way. And you can really sink I found out about this in 1996. And in my usual fashion jumped right in and I took gateway and guidelines and lifelines all in the same year. It took me an hour after I after photos, one of you last night after I left. I think it was after guidelines, it took me an hour to be able to go over 40 miles an hour. It was it was. That's right. That's right. You're not your target. It's hard to ever get back to Kansas after you do that. But I was always drawn to Hemi sync, because because it took two years a thoughtful, organized way of working and non ordinary reality. The other thing that appealed to me was that it didn't look as the bigger as the as the drumming and routers and so forth in the shamanic tradition that I was being trained in at the time. And it seemed like it would fit a little bit more comfortably in an office setting. So I just say, well, I'll play a little music let you relax, we'll see. We'll see what happens. This isn't. And so. So I found it a very useful didn't require me to change my thinking about helping spirits. And I was very fortunate because when I took the Monroe Institute trainings, the same gang showed up here, as it did when I did the shamanic work. So I had I had similar helpers. And it didn't, it didn't require me to have to shift from one to the other. For which I was very grateful. But then the question came, you know, how I started going more and more into my shamanic training. And the question came up of Well, which one do I stay with? Or how do I choose because the journaling process requires you to go to upper road or lower road and Mini World and as I moved more deeply into, into more intensive training in shamanism, I realized that that Bob Monroe's either state and the focus levels will not mesh. And so like a good shamanic practitioner, I didn't try to figure it out by myself. I journeyed in essence, nasty spirits, you know, how do I how do I figure this out, and they were very kind. And they thought it would be a really good idea before I started going to the upper lower room, if you remember that Lapland drum was going to the upper or the lower world for today to focus 10 and focus 12 First, and, and I was able to take off my training news to some degree and, and be able to say focus tent, you know, data that in my mind very clearly and intently, and then go to and feel the, to the physiologic response, go to 12 here with physiologic response, which is right at the edge. And then instead of going to 15, I would go to my entry point to the upper right or my entry point to the low world. So that blended very nicely for me. And like I said, it didn't require me to make a conceptual shift. When I'm doing Soul Retrieval work, the soul retrieval work requires me I don't have to go to either upper or lower level I I changed my state of consciousness I met by my helpers and they take me to where I need to go to retrieve the solo part. And so I go to I go to focus 15 and wait in the void for to be picked up basically. Which which also works out really well. Okay. Let me tell you about where I am here. Oh, I wanted to tell you the things that I've that I found very helpful about conceptually about Monterey Institute in in shamanism. The first is they share a common attitude that we're more than our physical bodies. The second is that in guidelines when we're working with your inner self help her regards however you understand it. As I as I experienced it, here at TMI, I could be either the guides could be either inner or outer ones. You could see them as a part of you or you could see them as outside of you. There's a distinction in shamanism in which the helping spirits are considered to be outside of you. Consider to be separate, unless you voluntarily merged with them for the for their compassion and power to work with that. The third commonalities in healing divination and psychopomp work. work and by psychopomp work and conducting souls to the afterlife. These are bedrock things for shamanic practitioner, and they have counterparts in every one of TMS trainings. And the first thing is that both forms to your mind shamanism, embrace the powerful energies of respect and compassion, and humility and gratitude. So, let me tell you a little bit about the shamanic techniques. They were these three that I've already mentioned healing psychopomp work divination. And then there's a fourth one that Michael Horner has developed, and which I think relates directly to to my work, which is shamanic counseling. And I'll tell you a little bit more about each of these in terms of healing the ocean in a shamanic perspective, there are three kinds of illness. The first is loss of power. The second is a spiritual intrusion. And the third is so loss and what we saw a loss of power, again, from a shamanic perspective, the new terms in the I have to tell you, the internist mean, just goes. Okay, Cecile 41:28 de saying, I write, you know, there's just this point where I still feel, even with all the experiences I have, I still feel this push pull. I also have to live and work in a in a very traditional medical center, and teach medical students and residents and fellows and faculty. And so there's this, there's this funny dance that I do. And I think I think maybe even harder than doing the shamanic work and journeying and whatever the harder work is in translating and languaging this in such a way that people can feel comfortable enough to at least consider a larger model. So there's a lot of fancy dancing around language. But from a shamanic perspective, the loss of power typically shows up as chronic problems. So maybe we can't upper respiratory tract infections, chronic depression, chronic misfortune, you see the people who go around and slip this little black cloud follows them. Yeah, and what a shaman would do would be to help this person by recovering a lost power animal. The second one is spiritual intrusion. And this typically shows up as a more localized problem. It might be an ulcer or localized infection, it might be cancer that's localized. And what the shaman would do in this case will be to remove the intrusion from the body and neutralize it. And I really say that a shaman doesn't see an intrusion. As as evil it just sees it as misplaced energy. And that often the the person, the patient by their thoughts or by their physiologic depletion, have put themselves in a vulnerable put their energy in a vulnerable state where this intrusion can come in. When treatments can be removed, this is a dramatically removing intrusion and this is a sucking Charmin from Tibet, who is drawing out the the localized pain from from this woman's arm by sucking it through a tube. As she's doing this, what you need to know is that she is merged with the gun one of the goddesses of the mountains there Tibet is doing this work. Now, there are other ways to remove an intrusion of non ordinary reality. So you can sort of gather up in your hands you can neutralize it in a fire you can neutralize it in water. Sometimes, people will take an intro or shaman will take an intrusion into a stone or into an animal to take it out of the person's body. The third form is from Venus is considered soul loss. When we use case the soul is considered to be one vitality or lifeforce. And shamans feel that as we go through life, and we have traumatic experience physical ones or emotional ones, that a lot of times when we go through a painful experience, a part of our soul essence breaks away in order to survive the trauma. And sometimes it comes back and sometimes it doesn't And we. And they feel we can let say loss sometimes manifests as addictions Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, dissociative disorders, unresolved grief. And sometimes you'll hear cling to whether or not as a soul loss, you'll hear it in people's language, they'll often say, I've never been the same since whatever it is, and that's often a clue to a soul loss. The shaman will journey to the helping spirits and do a diagnostic to find out which of these or whether a combination of these was useful. You might recall in the second case, I told you remember when I did the soul retrieval for I actually got back a power animal as well as the soul part. And that's because both showed up and seem connected. The fourth one, sorry, soccer, popular coaches conducting this search after death. Certainly lifelines is a wonderful way to do that. I think a lot of us maybe had been doing the first case I told you about before I had shot and train. I'll refer I have an institute trainee. I think what I did was to call her back. And she wasn't pleased. But it was not grateful. And I certainly didn't tell her that. 46:35 But I think we do I think we do this. The formal training helps us, I think, organize our intention, a lot of times, but there's the thing there's nothing more powerful, I think in organizing work and non ordinary reality, then a great sense of need. If a person has a great sense of need, or we feel deeply compassionately wanting to help. I think a lot of things happen that maybe in retrospect, you can say oh, this is what I did. But I but I wouldn't have that I think they can happen anyway. 47:27 Divination is, to me a wonderful way to be in the world. And my hunch is that a lot of you do this all the time you look for meaningful coincidences. And I'm responding to what Peter said this morning, where, you know, he says, he doesn't know well, this this is out here he is his responsibility for what's in here. And I have to say that I don't know what truth is cabinet of tea, but that I'll settle for a good model. And for me, a good model is to behave in my world as if there are four coincidences happening all the time, especially when bad things happen, or
