2002 Professional Seminar: Hemi-Sync®: A Healing of the Self (Gary Chalkin) (Transcript) NOTE: This is a raw transcript – it is exactly as created by otter.ai. 00:03 So is there a secret about the IRS? Our already talked about it actually. Hello, I'm Gary chicken, I'm psychiatrists. And I guess I've been called an unusual one a number of times. I always was trying to figure out, how come I ended up the last speaker at nine o'clock. As we got closer to this time, I, you know, I was wondering whether it was saving the best for last, but that delusion disappeared very, very quickly. And I came to realize that my function was to help us all ground. And as Bob says, On the tapes, the more you come back to see one, on this level, the farther you can go the next time. So I guess for tape day tomorrow. Hopefully our feet start on the ground. My hope is to make this discussion and presentation as relevant as possible, particularly for therapists, but I think that it'll be relevant for all others who are here. Because this is really how I work, actually, in sessions with clients who come in to see me, this is the kind of thing I actually do. I think that in many of our work, we either spend a lot of time in the ordinary world, or we spend time in the non ordinary world, and how do these two come together? How do you know when somebody's ready to kind of venture out? I remember when I was here for lifelines, there were some people having some problems, actually. And I know that the policy here and we had a bit of discussion about it at that time, but the policy here was, people could take as many of the trainings that they wanted in a row. Whereas it used to be there was a certain amount of time in between, and I just didn't feel there was quite enough time for people to really be able to integrate what it was. Maybe we saw a bit of that with the study that was looking at self actualization. And at that point, you know, maybe six days doesn't really tell us much about what's happened. Instead, perhaps we needed to be testing these people out a couple of weeks after they got back to their jobs. So with that, I'm going to be talking about today's presentations called Hemi sync, a healing of the self. And just everybody else has talked about their technology. I've been called a Luddite in my time. And actually, just before I came here, I did give a presentation at my hospital called leadership is letting go of fear. And for that, I basically learned how to use PowerPoint and basically did the whole presentation in PowerPoint, I said, they have to let go of their fear. So do I. But as you heard, there was a story about the airport. And my choice was not to bring my laptop computer, because I had three flights and I was searched, the person selected from the plane all three times. And so I was glad that I did not have my computer with them messing with it the whole time. Because I had a feeling that if anything went wrong, it probably would have gone wrong with my computer at that moment. So Hemi sync healing of the self. Originally, I thought I was going to be presenting after dinner when I first was told, and when I arrived here, I found it was later but we've had dinner. We've had some presentations, and of course, what you're supposed to have after dinner is a show. And so isn't that really what TMI stands for theater of minds identity. So we're going to be learning about our identity here. And tonight's performance is going to be Dr. See, finds out who he isn't. Or we could call it doctor heal thyself. Oh First a disclaimer that my presentation can cause moral outrage, narcissistic irritability, irreverence, racing, thinking, nausea. And I also need to be careful because on each topic, I could probably talk an hour. All right, so I guess maybe acute sleepiness or cure for insomnia. Okay, so let's set the scene first. All right. And the scene is that Dr. C visits his therapist, Dr. Lightning Rod. Okay, by the way, that's my email. And let me set up the office here. All right. What we're going to do is a gestalt empty chair technique. All right. And because I'm now standing behind, I guess this would be an integration with psychoanalysis, I guess. And by the way, informed consent for you, the audience to participate in be here has been obtained. Right. Now you don't mind Dr. C, do you? I didn't think so. Now, tell me, what is the problem that brings you here today? Oh, hold on. I want to know who I'm not. Well, that's the usual request around here that just wants that somebody would want to know who they are. Your therapy process is going to be like this. People keep looking for a truth that fits their reality. Given our reality, the truth doesn't fit. If you experience it, it's the truth. The same thing believed is a lie. In life, understanding is the booby prize. Now, to kind of understand what that statement meant, is to take a look basically at of course, is that people come looking for answers that they already know, it's very hard not to know something you don't. And what may have been the truth may no longer be the truth, it could have changed in the next instant. But this understanding being the booby prize, what does that mean? Well, it always reminds me of an old Woody Allen story. When Porter comes to Woody Allen, and says, Mr. Allen, I've heard that you've been in psychoanalysis for 10 years has it helped me says No, but I'll give it another 10 years. In Zen Buddhism, they also have a saying that says, Don't mistake the finger pointing at the moon, for the moon. And I think that many times my experience has been in coming in contact with New Age people is that they've mistaken the finger pointing at the moon for the moon. And so if we want to heal ourselves, then we need to take a look at something larger. What we're going to learn about tonight, is that the mind or our egos, is what I'm going to call small s self. And how it differs from large s self was pretty confusing for many people. Actually, it's confusing for the people here because I submitted an article and a presentation. And on both of them, it used the small ass in healing of the self Now surely is a wonderful individual. And she took both of them and corrected it in her editorial fashion and made it a capital. But in actuality, what I'm talking about is a healing of our smaller selves, not our larger cells. Okay, the healing of the smaller self is getting to the largest self. Now, 09:51 all of you were given a packet and hopefully you have some paper. And so the first thing I'd like to do is I would like for you to Take a piece of paper and a pen will do. And if you've seen this before, please don't ruin it for the person next to you. All righty. All right. And so what I want you to do is draw nine dots on a page that looks like that. All right. And then what I'd like for you to do is to connect all nine dots. With four straight lines without picking your pencil or pen up from the paper, just give us a try for a minute. I'm gonna be live for All righty, so I will show you the answer. And that's the answer looks like that. Okay, if you could not get the answer to this, and it felt as though it was impossible to do. It was because you had a belief. And that belief probably came as a child, that you played a game called dots or boxes. And literally, you could not think outside of the box. Because how to do it, is you have to leave the box. And so what tonight's going to be about is the finding the box and thinking outside of it, not being trapped by our ego. 11:59 I always said that. If you want to get the right answer, you got to ask the right question. I think that came up before about questions. Well, we're no longer looking for the right answer. We're going to be looking for a spiritual answer. And so I would propose that we have to ask a spiritual question. And I'd like to propose one from my spiritual guru named rams Zoo. And rams zoo wrote a book called no way for the spiritually advanced. And, by the way, in case you don't think that that book exists, here it is. All right. You can be seen sitting for hours, palms turn toward heaven. Eyes, shut your breath, even as it exits your nose, your attention is focused. And you can even go into focus 27 You've been doing this for a while now. You're getting good at it. At first, you could barely sit for five minutes or go out of body. Now you can disappear for hours. Rams zoo has a question for you. Why do you come back? 13:33 Right here, why do we come back? If all of this is so wonderful? Well, to begin the process of learning the difference between small as self and largest self. I'd like to show you one of the classic experiments in behavioral psychology. Right. And, you know, in psychology, they have learning theory, and they talk about conditioning. And there are two types of conditioning. There's classical conditioning, Pavlov's dog, you know, paired stimuli, and we ring the bell and without the food and the dog salivates. And then there's operant conditioning, where we look at how behavior varies with rewards and negative reinforcement. We never punish anybody, do we? We just negatively reinforce your behavior to extinguish it. Yes. Thank you. All righty. And in our experiment, we're going to use the two largest groups that have been used in behavioral psychology. Rats and who can guess the graduate students? Absolutely. That's right. And they're very similar. Alright, Okay, I will say nobody cares if you torture a rat and nobody cares your torture graduates through, but they're both cheap is actually the reality. And since what, since we saw the statistics here that we have an over representation of graduate students is going to be all very, very relevant. All righty. And so now we need to motivate our rat, okay, and so how we're going to motivate our rat is we're not going to feed it for a few days. So while rat is good and hungry, sort of like the condition that most of us run around in hungry to know that we're important or that to achieve something or hungry to express our love doesn't matter. If you're hungry, you need some food, you go to the refrigerator. So we now have the rat, and our human motivated sufficiently, and we'll come back to some of these things a little bit more. And we need a reward for our rat. Well, what would be a good reward? How about cheese? That's right, how about a crumb of cheese, we got to make it small, sort of like the rewards that most of us get in life. All right. Because if we get too big a reward, we'll stop dancing, and we'll be fat, dumb and happy. And we won't want to do anything. So to make sure that we're, you know, working hard, the rewards have to be small. I mean, you think about it. Alright, how many people you know, if they said, I'll pay you three times the amount that you're earning now, for three times, the work would work three times as hard, most of us would probably take one and a half times the money and work half as hard. People are smart. All right. So we now have our motivational unit. And what we have here is a system that, let's take a look at there we go. All right. Majan trying to get this onto PowerPoint, right. All right. Now, okay, what we have here is a box, okay. And three, tunnels open to the box, one, two, and three, open here and closed on the ends. All righty. And so we take our crumb of cheese, and we put it into the third tunnel over here. And we throw a rat into the box. And luckily, we have our microphone over there. All right, because we've done these experiments before. And what we hear is squeak, squeak. Ah, I'm hungry, and I smell cheese. And maybe our rat sees this second column to right in front and goes running down, there's no cheese and comes out, maybe runs
