[694.8-700.4] and over again, that people are looking for what is bigger than them.
[700.4-702.0] What is more than them?
[702.0-706.9] And being in an extended state of consciousness, you can feel it.
[706.9-713.5] Bob Monroe said that the only way to know is to find out for yourself.
[713.5-714.9] And so we can read books.
[714.9-716.6] We can talk to people.
[716.6-721.2] We can have dinner table discussions about, well, I think that that's true.
[721.2-724.1] And yes, I might be more than my physical body.
[724.1-727.5] I can intellectually conceive of that.
[727.5-733.5] But as Mr. Monroe said, the only way you're going to know, really know, is to find out
[733.5-735.2] for yourself.
[735.2-743.6] And that's what the Monroe Institute offers, is a participatory, experiential exploration
[743.6-746.1] so that you might know for yourself.
[746.1-748.1] Now, where is it located?
[748.1-751.4] I want to say Virginia, but I know that's not right.
[751.4-757.3] Well, it's in Virginia, in rural Virginia, just south of Charlottesville.
[757.3-761.3] And interestingly enough, I'm here speaking to you in California.
[761.3-768.6] The Ions people have opened a new retreat center just north of Golden Great in Pataloma.
[768.6-771.3] And we are offering classes there as well.
[771.3-775.5] So people on the west coast can go to the local Ions retreat center.
[775.5-778.5] So the Monroe Institute is now bicoastal?
[778.5-781.2] Well we're in partnership with Ions.
[781.2-782.2] Oh, how wonderful.
[782.2-786.7] And it's a co-developed procedure, and we're really excited about the expansion.
[786.7-788.7] Oh, that'll help both.
[788.7-794.9] For those who don't know, Ions is the Institute of Noetic Sciences that was started...
[794.9-797.6] Founded by Ed Mitchell some years ago.
[797.6-798.8] Yeah, an astronaut.
[798.8-807.6] And they also look at expanded state of consciousness a little bit on the mental point of view.
[807.6-812.2] And so here you are bringing the experiential in with them.
[812.2-813.2] What a nice thing.
[813.2-818.5] Now, my vision is, from reading your book, which we'll get to in a minute, is that do
[818.5-823.7] you go into a chamber to get your mind to be very quiet, and then do you have music?
[823.7-825.5] Is that the hemisync part of it?
[825.5-826.5] Would you explain that?
[826.5-832.8] Well, first of all, we don't think that that is the ultimate answer.
[832.8-836.9] We call the tools that we have training wheels.
[836.9-841.8] Just like you might learn how to do this, learn how to balance on a bicycle, and then
[841.8-843.9] you can take the training wheels off.
[843.9-850.1] So if we're going to talk about the training wheels, yes, we have sound technology involving
[850.1-854.9] the use of this binaural beating or this vibrato, putting a slightly different sound
[854.9-861.1] of one ear than the other, which alters your brainwaves, and a series of tapes with exercises
[861.1-869.9] that you do over a week-long period on these tapes so that you're familiar with this navigation
[869.9-871.2] of these territories.
[871.2-875.1] Much like if you were thrown into a swimming pool, you wouldn't know how to navigate or
[875.1-877.7] turn or get from one point to the other.
[877.7-882.8] And so we very gently guide you through the tools, give you a compass by which you
[882.8-886.3] might steer through these tools and adventuring.
[886.3-889.3] What are you outside of your physical body?
[889.3-891.9] I bet that's scary for some people.
[891.9-896.7] Well, fear is one of the things that sort of holds us back.
[896.7-901.2] But let's look for a minute at fear since you brought it up.
[901.2-902.2] Okay.
[902.2-903.2] It's an interesting time.
[903.2-906.5] It's a fascinating thing because unfortunately our world is being ruled by fear.
[907.2-916.1] Well, a very wise, wise person once mentioned to me that the ultimate fear, the root of
[916.1-919.2] fear is that we are separate from God.
[919.2-922.1] Well, that's what started the whole thing.
[922.1-925.6] That's the fear of death, is that, ooh, what'll happen on the other side?
[925.6-928.0] Well, guess what?
[928.0-929.0] It's really stupid.
[929.0-935.0] I mean, by the nature of the creation, we cannot be separate from God.
[935.0-936.0] That's right.
[936.0-937.0] We are.
[937.0-938.0] Right.
[938.0-942.1] So what are we to do with this thing called fear that we experience if it doesn't make
[942.1-943.1] sense?
[943.1-946.2] Well, that is a human point if I've ever heard one.
[946.2-947.6] So what do we do with this?
[947.6-948.9] Because people want to know.
[948.9-952.0] I think you use it as a reminder.
[952.0-954.4] I think it's a way of reminding.
[954.4-955.8] Say, wait a minute.
[955.8-956.8] I must be crazy.
[956.8-958.3] I'm afraid.
[958.3-962.3] And I cannot be separate from God.
[962.3-963.6] Therefore there's nothing to be afraid of.
[963.6-969.3] So whenever we feel the fear, we use it as a reminder saying, I must be looking at this
[969.3-970.3] incorrectly.
[970.3-974.6] I must be literally out of my mind to be afraid.
[974.6-983.0] There must be some other way to look at this because I cannot be separate from the Creator.
[983.0-989.7] And when you live your life that you're not separate, that you are one, things are
[989.7-990.8] so much easier.
[990.8-991.8] Yes.
[991.8-992.8] Life just goes.
[992.8-993.8] Yes.
[994.4-998.4] You know, because you're being taken care of, you're being supportive, but boy, we tend
[998.4-999.4] to forget that.
[999.4-1000.4] And so part of...
[1000.4-1001.4] You are in harmony.
[1001.4-1002.4] Yes.
[1002.4-1005.2] You are not in dis-ease.
[1005.2-1006.4] Yes.
[1006.4-1008.9] You are in harmony.
[1008.9-1013.8] And even if you have dis-ease around you, the more you bring the harmony in, I think
[1013.8-1017.7] the better you are able to handle whatever disease is going...if you have a physical
[1017.7-1023.2] thing going on in your body, the more you bring the harmony in and remember it's
[1023.2-1025.4] a temporary blip.
[1025.4-1028.4] We're here as humans as a temporary blip.
[1028.4-1032.3] Some people tend to think this is all there is, but I have a different take on it.
[1032.3-1034.6] Well, you're more than your physical body.
[1034.6-1036.7] Yes, yes, yes, and I'm glad.
[1036.7-1038.4] And I've never experienced the hemisynch.
[1038.4-1040.8] I've listened to a little of the music that's called meta-music.
[1040.8-1041.8] Yes.
[1041.8-1043.8] And there is some hemisynch in that.
[1043.8-1047.7] Okay, explain what meta-music is because I'm going to go back to my door and
[1047.7-1049.9] find my tape and get it out now.
[1049.9-1050.9] Okay.
[1050.9-1057.6] The vibrato sound, the rate of vibrato is what alters your brain waves through
[1057.6-1060.0] neurochemistry, which you won't go into this morning.
[1060.0-1061.0] Right.
[1061.0-1065.4] And we have put this into several different formats.
[1065.4-1071.4] One has to do with guided mental imagery or guided meditations.
[1071.4-1076.0] Others have to do with affirmations, giving yourself affirmations in altered
[1076.0-1078.2] states of consciousness.
[1078.2-1082.9] Others have to do with background sounds that you might use to reduce
[1082.9-1084.4] anxiety.
[1084.4-1092.3] So we mix the vibrato beating binaural beat with music, and then we call that
[1092.3-1097.2] meta-music, meaning that you can listen to different kinds of music, some for
[1097.2-1098.6] meditation.
[1098.6-1103.0] Some have been used with kids that have learning disabilities and playing the
[1103.0-1107.8] music in the background to improve their learning capabilities.
[1107.8-1111.4] Others have used it, for example, in dentists' office to reduce anxiety
[1111.4-1113.7] before you go in to see your dentist.
[1113.7-1117.3] In the waiting room, they'll pay some nice meditative meta-music in the
[1117.3-1121.2] background so when you go in to see the dentist, you're not filled with
[1121.2-1123.4] anxiety and worry and concern.
[1123.4-1126.0] And the patient doesn't even know that they just feel calmer.
[1126.0-1127.0] Fine.
[1127.0-1129.0] Yeah, that's perfect.
[1129.0-1132.3] I want to go back to fear a little bit because we kind of...
[1132.3-1133.3] Oh, I don't want to go back.
[1133.3-1134.3] Oh, I know.
[1134.3-1135.8] You don't...you want to stay in the bliss.
[1136.4-1139.6] But I want to talk about how people get out of fear when they come to the
[1139.6-1147.2] Monroe Institute or go to Petaluma to Ions and work with this whole process of
[1147.2-1150.5] how to understand more of who they are.
[1150.5-1152.7] And their first thing is, I'm not doing this.
[1152.7-1153.7] Yes.
[1153.7-1157.0] Because I imagine that 90% of the people, you know, they go there with
[1157.0-1159.3] good intentions, but then they get faced right up to it.
[1159.3-1161.1] Whoa, this is too much for me to handle.
[1161.1-1163.4] It's a very common thing.
[1163.5-1167.7] We have to remember that fear is an eco-based situation.
[1167.7-1168.7] That darn ego.
[1168.7-1169.7] Ego, meaning self.
[1169.7-1173.3] And ego is all about the body, protection and defense of the body.
[1173.3-1174.3] Oh, yeah.
[1174.3-1176.8] Let's not let the spirit handle this because I know better than the
[1176.8-1177.9] spirit.
[1177.9-1182.9] So the way that we have people work through this is through very
[1182.9-1185.7] gradual desensitization.
[1185.7-1189.1] And the idea is you walk into this gently and then step back.
[1189.1-1190.1] See, it's okay.
[1190.1-1191.8] So you walk into it gently.
[1191.8-1195.9] Much like, let's use a swimming metaphor, you would walk down the
[1195.9-1199.5] first step into the swimming pool and you'd swish your feet around.
[1200.0-1207.2] 2. Step Back and You Go Down 2 Steps
[1230.5-1237.2] in which we teach using the Hemi-Sync process is to gradually introduce these things and
[1237.2-1239.8] then step back and talk about it as a group.
[1239.8-1241.2] What was your experience like?
[1241.2-1242.8] What was that about?
[1242.8-1243.8] Let's go in again.
[1243.8-1247.9] And of course each time you go into the next step you have to do the first one, then the
[1247.9-1250.5] second one, then the third one, and then you back up.
[1250.5-1254.2] And the next time you try you go one, two, and three again.
[1254.2-1260.2] So pretty soon that first adventure into consciousness becomes just normal to you.
[1260.2-1264.5] And I would imagine that you don't want to use this music when you're driving.
[1264.5-1266.0] That's true.
[1266.0-1272.2] We have some products that have to do with awake and alert and stimulating.
[1272.2-1274.3] So for those on a commute, that's a good one.
[1274.3-1276.0] That might be an interesting thing.
[1276.0-1280.6] But we do have imprinted on the CDs themselves, do not use while operating heavy machinery
[1280.6-1285.3] or while driving, because they're designed to be more meditative.
[1285.3-1290.1] So what do people who are in this fast-paced life of ours, what can they do to start
[1290.1-1295.7] exploring their consciousness if they can't get to the Monroe Institute?
[1295.7-1299.0] What tools do you guys have outside of the Institute itself?
[1299.0-1305.5] Well, understand that there are many, many organizations around just going to yoga classes,
[1305.5-1308.8] going to Tai Chi classes or away.
[1308.8-1317.0] Once you have that inkling in you to search and find what is there more to God's creation
[1317.0-1318.2] than this?
[1318.2-1325.5] I actually, more than this, everybody has to find their own path, their own divine right
[1325.5-1327.3] path.
[1327.3-1333.1] We at the Institute offer a technologically-based sound technology.
[1333.1-1339.5] You can get these tapes and CDs to try at home, or you can go to one of the classes
[1339.5-1343.5] and participate in a group for a week-long situation.
[1343.5-1347.7] And you have a website, MonroeInstitute.org.
