Robert A. Monroe Monday Night GATEWAY Talk 1989-05 (Transcript) NOTE: This is a raw transcript – it is exactly as created by otter.ai. Bob Monroe 00:00 I wish we could go back to something we used to do several years ago. And that's take Polaroid portraits of everyone as they enter. And then as they exit, it's I can perceive it very easily because I'm in and out, but the changes in just your facial expressions is so very, very different. And, of course, I had an old friend who argue that point where whoever says, Well, what do you expect if you lie around for a week? Bob Monroe 00:46 But it's very true that Bob Monroe 00:55 that there are patterns now that you at least, have had some glimpse of, and at the very, very least, most importantly, this is the easiest part of this to me, because I have discovered slowly through the years that I am not a ven person so much as I am, when person now is something that's between then, and when. So for you, this is now then was as late as three hours that code how juicy whatever that three hours was, and you don't have a full feeling of when that was? So the big thing is that, where are you now? Well, one of the biggest things that you can do is to learn how to play in different ways. One of the ways that you can learn to play is that you do have upcoming the question of reentry, and going back from whence you came in this present time space, and are filled with the need for explanations as to what you've been doing. And it sometimes is going to be very rough to say, well, what are you doing all this week? Well, it's rather hard to describe. And 02:46 the best way I can give you to describe the problem is before this was built, before we had this whole facility, which is Bob Monroe 03:02 10 years ago, let me as the this one friend from New York City we were conducting these over at a center, just west of Richmond. And in that case, everyone was in a large room like this, lying down close to each other like that, and listening to headphones and lying on pads. And it was when people were in 12 or beyond, there was nothing so much as a walking through a whole bunch of logs there because the reading is so shallow and everything else is very, very quiet. Anyway, after a whole week aside, the session is New York man in his reentry province, as Bob says, I want to tell you I have a real problem in reentry initiatives. What's that? He says, I will go back. And I go to the office Monday morning, and all my guys at the office are say, Well, what do you do? And when I tell them, they will never believe me. And I says What do you mean they will never believe you? He says when I tell them that I had been lying down all week between two beautiful girls and I've had no sex and no booze. They'll never believe me Bob Monroe 04:41 at least we now have walls. How many of you know the old story about bundling boards, early colonial history. And you know about that that's there's a lot of stories built around the bundling board. For though Those of you who are suitably ignorant back in the days, colonial days when it was too cold to do anything else, the when the young gal had a suit and he came courting it was they wanted some kind of privacy. So the only place they can get privacy it was in in, let's say, a bedroom, but it was cold in the bedroom. And it was quite natural that here's this warm, comforting covered bed is to get in the bed. Now that was I could hold their conversations. But some wise old character built what was called a bumbling board that went down the middle of the bed. So that was about a foot and a half to two feet tall, depending on the on the cynicism of the Father. And that went in the bed and it was definitely fixed in the bed so that you couldn't they could talk over the bundling board, but they couldn't do anymore. So the famous stories, of course, are about well, if he was not man enough to get over the bunting board, he's not worth marrying. So you can think about all sorts of aspects of that. And while you are then fooling around in your fantasies on what happened. And what you're going to talk about, one of the nice ones is I'll give you a rough one to play with it thoroughly confused. What you do is you take your fist form it like that, stick your thumb out like that, you go on. And when you go like that, you say NIF boom, boom, Nit boom, boom. Now what that this is, all about three years, maybe more I keep saying is three years ago, maybe more. A piece of Muscovites Muscovite slang straight off the Lower East Side of Moscow, if you want to put it that way. Or Harlem of Moscow. And when you say knit, boom, and you say it with a great accent. In Russian, very, very politely transferred. Or translated, simply means you don't know what the hell he's talking about. Boom, boom. One of the day you meet someone from Moscow and he will look with you at astonishment. Because you know, that little piece of Russian slang because I say I have translated it very politely Bob Monroe 08:01 some other things you can play with. One of them, of course is that now that you are in another modality, try the two to three sleep cycle routine, it's once you get into it is very, very easy. And that is that I go to sleep for these two or three seasons sleep cycle, whatever is best for you, where you wake up, after three hours or four and a half hours, whatever it is, and you're lying in bed and you're completely wide awake and you are fully rested. And you are fully conscious. At that point, it is supremely easy to roll out of your body once you've lost that fear. It's so easy I can't tell you how easy it is because of you don't have to go through any count to 10 or anything like that or you can want to fasten it tighter. Just think of 12 and go to 12 Whatever. But it's so easy then to simply roll out a phase because the habit of the autumn on autonomic habit of rolling out of phase has just completed itself back this way so it's easy again to open it up that way to find it very, very easy. Especially when you now they don't have the fear of that transference. Know that you can play with when lying around in bed in a very bored sort of way is begin again, then, at that three o'clock in the morning, go to play. That's a good time after those two or three sleep cycles but you to take your arms and try to move them over your body like this, but in so moving, you'll find first, there Gravitic resistance. And then you don't worry about that you take the there's sort of some peculiar thing, once you find that you're all right, there's another kind of resistance is almost like breaking service surface tension. And you can feel it and it gets harder and harder. And then suddenly, it's like, it pops like that and seizing and bring your hands up like this. Might not the first time anything like that, but you lazily try it a few times. And eventually, you are there with your eyes closed and you feel and these hands seem very real to you, then you cheat a bit and squint your eyes with your eyes open. And you will see that these hands have a ring around them all around the outline, like a blue glowing, or almost, you can see right through them. And you can see the rest of the bed or the wall or whatever. And if you look down here, you will see your physical arms are down this to your side. This is a very easy way to begin this prospecting is that we're in into the OB seat and you play with him live in DC very real until you look down there. Now your physical and then of course the next step. Once you've gotten that under control, you how many times can you put your hands over your chest before you get bored. So here, you take this one hand and discover how extremely elastic it is. And reach outward, upward. Whichever way generally you're on your back and reach out and push against the ceiling and the ceiling feels very hard I'll but you push a little farther harder. And suddenly, it's surface tension as it were is broken and your hand goes through the ceiling and you can feel the drywall, you feel the insulation in the floor or roof up above and stick your hand up. Then you stretch up and up and up until you can't find anything else. And you do that for a while. And that gets boring. And then you say well, I'll try sideways and you go through apartment after apartment, this one your house after this and feel around and have some fun that ways you might begin to figure out. And so, but that's your hand and some are in rare instances, I've heard people who can perceive through their hands this way I cannot I've tried to put eyes on my hand, I can't put any highs in the way and Longo gave. So then the next trick is to begin to lift your legs up and do the same thing for one leg up like that. And you have the same you have to overcome that resistance. And you will feel it is something different from gravity, it's important to feel it, then you get them both up here like that. And you clap them together like this. And we're going to have a nice stretch up. And finally, you see oh, well, this is the way to get out of body. So you'll get the legs up and you'll get the hips up. And then you can get your shoulders up during your way up. You're like that. But your head is still in the physical body and you'll Yank, yank and yank me. I don't know why never works, you can't get back out that way. So then you go down and do out this way. But you think, Oh, it should be easy. And you'll but it's just as if there's a hook connecting that physical head with that. That I their head and you can't get it out. These are things maybe one of you will find out why. So anyway, those are the kinds of things that you can play with, that will in turn, be of interest to you. There are a lot of other things in the when one of the key things it's available to you. In the wind thing is that we have a graduate program here called guidelines, and you may or may not be aware of it. But it's I believe booked out for the rest of the year, I'm not sure. Where's the continuation of is going on from 21 as it were, you know, very deep self integration. And one of the things that's made it now very successful is that that does include a one to one session in the lab over here for each participant. And we found that we have to limit the number of participants because we can't get them home in the lab. So that's, but I would think that for those who want to move in that particular direction, it's very exciting stuff. And that reminds me Bob Monroe 15:25 our lab project manager wanted you all to have these. So I'll hand them out here. These are sort of take home things about that, haven't, Lisa, that. Patterns that take place in brain scans of you, does everybody have one, that's sort of a fun thing to have a picture to? What I don't know whose it is, I hope they haven't got mine again. But Bob Monroe 16:01 for those who are tactically minded in it, Skip, or they didn't tell you, we have a phenomenon taking place beyond our phenomenon. So we have a whole brand new and we're trying to figure out, and that is that we have about three people creating square waves. And that's kind of unheard thing to create square waves. You know, most of your EEG patterns are sought who's like this, we are people going like this. And we haven't been able to find any literature that even begins to explain what the square waves are all about. We'll find out. Of course, you know about this other thing that has developed in the lab that's so wonderful is that we have now a means to illustrate to the many people who, especially the biofeedback people who said, Well, what you're doing in your DC voltage measurement and your polarity shift, which we found so illustrative and accurate in terms of gauging human consciousness. They've
