rediscussed here. This personal benefit would cost the Aray nothing extra. a) Weight CORPO =! This was also sentioned in Part I, and would not be an added cost. oy d. Education: fhe usa af concentration tapes at work should be extended to the individual for howe use. Many of the soldiers give up on attaining an education while in service because of the distractions of barracks or faaily life. Howe use of the tapes would add no extra cost to the qovernaent, and would benefit the individual greatly. Practical use of these tapes is covered in Part III. 2, Self-esteem: [agrovesent in a person's work and hoae situations drings about a natural increase in self-esteea, The soldier wna Secomes proud of what ne/she is will want to resain a soldier, 1 is not only to the individual, but to the Aray, as well, ins is leads Spiritual quality: Although this benefit is not an autoeatic ane, tne fa a person mno becomes happier with theaselves and their work will become haopier with lif to reductions ia the rates of alcoholisa, drugs, criae, willful d tion af graperty, This is nat to that the use af nesisync tages will guarantee a drog in the crige rate, or will dry up an alconal saldier who would otherwise be lost to the Aray. But if an apport y exists to reduce instances of these in a day, it should cartainly be considered. 9 Pure enjoyment: Many of the heeisync tapes a taoly relaxing, and nica are the tapes af Lane Contes of these tapes should de available ing these in a tape library would cast the dray a slight dit ang aw wnat to send for, should he/sne want to order their cnn. --- PAGE 7 (OCR) --- UNCLASSIFIED bh. Self-improvements: Such tapes as the free-flow tapesiwould give the individual who had been trained in the use of the heaisync process an open-ended seans of self-iapravenent in any field, This feature has already been addressed by the Monroe Institute with the hesisync "leprove your golf’ and "Iaprove your Tennis* tapes. Again, the cost to the governsent to include these tapes in a library would be of very ainar cost, and would allow the individual to know what he/she wauld like to order for their own use, i, Personal stress-management: !t is usually true that stress sanagegent does nat begin by supervisory personnel until the prableas are beginning to get out of hand. The individual knows ang before this that he/she "has had it". Personal stress aanagaent is ane of the first things the individual has tried, but has usually found no way to cope with the stress It is both t idual the Aray who sould benefit fraa the also be used for aission-oriented uses. e tapes, at fo extra cost, since they nou’ Cant ah rier anes ura ETE, oo) Although this topic was included in Part 1, under (Me, Counseling, it should alsa be ‘stressed that the faeily which is having aarital difficulties is usually ey locking for “sosething...anything ta do about it". Personal use of the heaisync signals for eaotion control would give the individuals involved that "something® that they could do to heqin getting control Situation. Since the tapes for this purpose would already be used by the Chaplain, hove or s2 vould cost nothing aore to the aray. YNDLa --- PAGE 8 (OCR) --- UNCLASSIFIED HEMISYNC FROCESS AT FIELD STATION AUGSBURG I, The hemisync process, a3 any other process used by the U.S. Aray, aust be capable of being a saall part of a coherent whole. The aission af FSA comes above all other considerations. There are other prajects which aake their own requiresents of tise, finances, personnel, gersonal efforts, etc. [f the hesisyne process cannot be coordinated into these other requiresents, it cannot be used, since the other projects cannot give way to it. 2, A aajor part of the detailed investigation for this paper was to find whether or not igpleeentation of this project could be coherent with the facilities, tise, and other requireeents and constraints posed to its incorporation, 3. The following aajor categories of considerations proved sost isportant: a Time: The physical location of Gablingen Kaserne exerts a great influence on the tise constraints involved in all training at FSA, There is 4 set schedule for ‘shift* or “trick* bus transportation, Anycne who depends on these busses and aisses thea is stranded for up to 8 hours, or until soae ather aeans af transportation can be found. Secause of this difticulty, training at FSA is traditionally held during ‘on-duty' tiae, if possible. ‘Other options are training at the datallion facilities +/- two hours before or after the work tise. Since FSA has an active aission, training during “on-duty* hours often causes oss in aission effectiveness. Training during ‘off-duty* tise often causes loss in training effectiveness. Since hemisync training is aost effective when done frequently, large agounts of training tiae are In this way, the user could convescer} use the tape for the tise needed, stop the sachine, and would never need to rewind or set things up for its ms GIS use. 3) Those tages which This adds the cal probleas ¥ require deeper states of relaxation should be checked o: ther arablea of strict control aver the tapes (see belo y wall, a ainigia, there aust be ane person who has a working fers in its use, aeaber af Plans and TUS PkabACY SHOUD B= OIE — BUT BY ANAS, we SyecdD DISCUSS 76 GB, ————— gage Disacese Seavey corn StWEMaIT HELE --- PAGE 9 (OCR) --- UNCLASSIFIED Training, or of Operational Effectiveness, 2) Use of tapes for the Chaplain should be under direct control of the Chaplain. «. Physicals: Physical requirerents fall into two categories: ) Equipments: The equipsent needed is stereo playback equipaent and the hesisyne tapes. The quantities af each are not predictable at this tiae. 2) Spaces Any training requires space. Hemisync training, however, requires a quiet place, out af the streaa of noraal activity and interruptions. Since this training can be accoeplished individually during lunch, break, or off-duty time, it is logical to have a rooa dedicated for this purpose. This is very hard to iaplement at FSA, as building space is already severely liaited. As tar as cauld be discerned during the detailed investigation, there could be easy access to space for group classes in henisync training, but a dedicated rava is presently out of the question. This fact greatly influences the type and amount of hegisync use at FSA. 3} Storage: Having a library of tapes for use in training eans accessible storage requiresents. There are several places which would accoaodate such storage, give protection and security, and still accessability. This does not seem to be a aajor consideration at this tise. 4. Cares: The oerson in charge of eaintaining control over the tanes and recorders aust have the training and tive to see to the following requiresents: 1) Checking tapes in and cut, and aaintaining records on thea. 2) Maintaining tapes and recorders, and taking proper actions to have thea replaced / repaired as quickly as possible, when necessary. 3) Ordering new tapes for new purposes, and keeging the appropriate records on such orders, 4) Maintaining docusentation an tapes and their uses (see below). 2, Financial: The stove considerations will all translate sooner or later into aan-hours or dollars spent, A financial projection for a 2eqinning prograa should become a gart of the budget, as soon acsnessile, mrreecsnuc Mt f, Documentations The only way to know whether cr not the process is effective, and ta allow experience to aake it become sore effective is to se able to show dacusentation of conditions influenced dy the aracess. for the hemisync process, this aeans that an iacrovesent in Selected conditions at FSA should be dacuaentagle and provable, To this end the following suggestions are aade: 1) The process should de brought in with one or two specific target areas in sind, A study of certain target aspects within these areas should be aade before and after the iaplesentation. Experience gained froa this documentation would then be useful to plan for other target areas, 2) Goals should te stated st the beginning af each project, and an investigation of whether or act UNCLASSIFIED page § --- PAGE 10 (OCR) --- UNCLASSIFIED these goals were set at the end, If goals were not aet, reasons should be deterained for future improvegent, 3) A sugaary of each project should be forwarded to INSCOM for use by other units who plan related projects. 4) Project results should be kept in a historical file at FSA for use in planning future orcjects, 4, The following specific considerations aust also be aentioned: a. Record keeping for such tapes as language skills can also be used for keeping a roster at training credits. 4. Tapes which are specially sade, such as possible concentration tapes with the training aaterial iagressed over thes aust be carefully considered for classification. Security provisions and records aust be kept on such tapes. c. Tapes should be provided to resote site personnel, as needed. a, Check-out af tapes, such as sleep or weight control tapes should not be "pirated". Users should be warned that these are copyrighted tapes, and their duplication is illegal. eel f, Access ta tapes should be available to workers on all shifts, not just straight-day workers, only. g. Tapes for hose use wil! have to be kept either in the Sattalion areas, or with the Chaplain, since a tape which has deen played inside the SCIF is considered no longer Teapest approved, and cannot be allowed to leave the building. Science has long known that your brain is divided into two halves, or hesispheres. But only in recent years has it been discovered that these two halves are entirely different in the thoughts and functions they perfora, Moreover, sost of the tiae we think only with our ‘left brain*, when we use our "right brain*, it is priaarily to support the thought and action of the left. Otherwise, we do our best to ignore it. Ye use the left brain arisarily to talk and read, to do aathegatics, to reason deductively, to reseaber detail, to seasure tige, asong aany other facets - the source of logical, rational thought. It *knows* nothing alse. Qur "right brain’ is the originator of ideas, spatial sense, intuition, ausic, esotion, and probably such aore than we nom realize, it is timeless, apparently with a language all its own. Virtually everything we consider valuable is operated or controlled by our doainant left brain. Even if it originated in the right brain, such as an idea or ausic, the left brain takes over and puts it inte use, #e have generally regarded (those with dominant ‘right brained* thinking) with apused tolerance, suspicion, disust, irritation, distrust - and awe. How do we then go about using aore of our brain poner? Modern science has cose up with a aethod = and technique that offers auch promise and potential. It can be utilized with relative 2asa, dogs not require years of intensive training, and is not lisited to a narrow band of application. it is called HEMISYNC, wi ‘hort for heaishperic synchronization. Developed by the Monroe Institute of 4pplied Sciences, the process uses pulses af sound to help create siaultaneously an identical wave fora in both brain hesispheres, Originally, the Institute was granted
