[92.3-99.3] always welcome at 1-775-285-5800. That's 1-775-285-5800.
[99.3-108.8] Well, Nancy McMonagle is the President and Executive Director of the Monroe Institute,
[108.8-116.0] TMI, which is a research and educational organization that has been facilitating individuals' experience
[116.0-122.3] in the exploration of targeted and expanded states of consciousness for more than 40 years.
[122.8-129.4] Nancy helped build the foundations of TMI with Robert Monroe in the early 1970s and is now continuing
[129.4-135.0] the Institute's mission of advancing the exploration of human consciousness and the experience
[135.0-141.9] of expanded states of awareness as a path to creating a life of personal freedom, meaning,
[141.9-146.8] insight and happiness. And what a treat it is to welcome Nancy McMonagle to the program
[146.8-150.7] tonight. Thank you so much for joining me, Nancy, and welcome to the show.
[151.1-154.3] Well, thank you very much, Heather, for having me on tonight.
[155.1-161.5] This is a real treat. Well, I guess we should start out with, for people that don't know about
[161.5-164.6] the Monroe Institute, what do you do there?
[166.1-173.3] Well, for the last 40-plus years, and I should add that Bob Monroe, who's known for his work
[173.3-179.7] in out-of-body experiences and his books on the same topic, started this Institute over 40 years
[179.7-186.3] ago. And since then, and we continue to look into states of consciousness, try to understand
[186.3-192.6] what is happening in these expanded states of consciousness. How can we best use them?
[192.6-198.9] How can we understand them? And how can we explore all these various states, everything from just
[198.9-204.3] deep relaxation to being into states of consciousness that take us beyond the realms
[204.3-210.9] of reality as we know them here, meaning beyond physical matter reality. So we continue to do that
[210.9-217.5] work and then find ways, of course, to make people's lives the result of their being able
[217.5-222.6] to experience them. So what we do here is offer programs and what we have learned,
[222.6-229.8] taking people into these states of consciousness using an audio technology that Bob, gosh,
[229.8-235.7] I guess he must have developed this back in the 70s, Hemi Sync. And we also have another
[235.7-241.3] audio technology we're now using called spatial angle modulation. Using these technologies,
[241.3-248.6] we help people get into states of consciousness much more quickly. And of course, we do not use
[248.6-251.5] drugs. And so the person always remains in control.
[253.0-256.6] So then it must be pretty interesting when you're out and about and people ask you,
[256.7-257.5] what do you do?
[260.0-263.5] Try to do it. Can you say that in 10 words or less? Really?
[263.5-264.0] Right.
[264.0-266.7] It is fascinating when you're talking about, well, let's see, have you ever heard of the
[266.7-267.8] auto body experience?
[269.0-275.7] Right. Yes, right. When people ask me that I just look at them with a long thousand yards
[275.7-279.1] there and I say aliens. That's what I do.
[279.1-279.9] Aliens.
[280.6-282.1] Which we all are, of course.
[282.1-285.1] Yeah, right, right. And then they don't ask any more questions.
[285.8-290.6] All right. Well, that gives us a good framework for everything else that we're going to talk
[290.6-295.0] about tonight. And you know, last night, I guess we were talking about something else,
[295.0-300.6] but it kind of kept coming up as it often does, the subject of consciousness. And a listener sent
[300.6-306.6] me a very simple question. And I think your answer, you could probably answer this better
[306.6-311.4] than I did. She asked, gosh, consciousness, it's all I hear on the program all the time.
[311.4-313.9] What do you mean? What are you talking about?
[315.4-316.2] Help me out.
[316.2-319.7] It depends on who you're talking to. Well, of course, there must be
[319.7-328.2] 41,000 different definitions of that word. And for my purposes, what I look at, and I think
[328.2-335.0] actually everybody here might give you a little bit of a different explanation. But overall,
[335.0-344.5] what we look at is consciousness is a greater awareness. It's an energy. Bob Monroe believed
[344.5-350.5] that focused consciousness focused awareness would have all the answers to any of humanity's
[350.5-355.8] questions. And so when we talk about consciousness, what we're talking about,
[355.8-361.1] and it's beyond mental, we're not just talking a mental exercise here, I think it's a fundamental.
[362.4-367.5] It's a fundamental force, if you will, that my particular belief system, I think consciousness
[367.5-372.9] is in everything. There's a certain level of awareness in everything. There's a certain level
[372.9-378.7] of energy, if you will. And so consciousness and it's not something that's easy. It's like,
[378.7-386.5] okay, would you please describe describe love? To me, it's that difficult to wrap your your words
[386.5-393.0] around. It is what we're doing here is what we're trying to do is focus who we are, what we are,
[393.6-403.4] all that we are into, let's say, for example, you want to understand how to best approach a certain
[403.4-410.5] problem. How do you want to, learn how to use who and what you are to heal healing energy,
[410.5-418.5] for example, there's a certain approach we take for learning to control how we use our minds,
[418.5-423.7] and by minds, I'm not talking brain. So we're going beyond the materialistic here. And now
[423.7-428.2] we're into the great debate of materialism versus spirituality. I know it's a huge thing
[428.2-435.0] right now. But how can you combine those two? So consciousness, as far as I'm concerned,
[435.7-445.5] is about being as aware and connected to everything, everyone, all that is. And then
[445.5-449.2] how do you apply that in your life? Because if you can't apply it, I mean, we're here as
[449.8-456.0] physical human beings, spiritual human beings, you've got to be able to apply this to make
[456.0-461.2] your life better, to understand things better. And let's not forget to have fun.
[461.2-468.6] Oh, good Lord. Yes, really critically important to have fun. So though this is a huge, huge subject,
[468.6-477.4] and it's, it's all inclusive. And, and so very important. Oh, yeah. Oh, anyway, I know that's
[477.4-483.3] all over the place. But so be it. That's, well, don't have a five word explanation or
[483.3-488.8] definition for it. It's a very difficult question to answer. When I saw the question,
[488.8-495.8] because I have inherited the wormhole over here. So when I was your heart live and on the air,
[495.8-500.3] everybody's sending me their thoughts and their questions. And I love that aspect of doing the
[500.3-504.6] program. And when I saw this question come through, you know, what do you mean when you're
[504.6-509.9] talking about consciousness all the time, it almost felt like I was punched in the chest.
[510.7-517.2] Not because it will be it's a very good question. And I'm going because it's all that is, you know,
[517.2-524.5] how do you how do you talk about all something that is so all encompassing, which consciousness is?
[524.5-529.8] And how do you define something that most scientists all scientists don't even understand
[529.8-538.1] what it is? Trying God bless them. They are, they really are trying. And we've got some great
[538.1-544.2] people out there working away at it, you know, and the beauty of it is there's a lot going on now,
[544.2-550.4] where they're trying to blend the science with spirituality instead of making it an either or
[550.4-556.1] proposition. I think that's the right way to go. Because I think that's what we are. I think we
[556.1-563.5] are a combination of a material body and a spiritual body. And in my mind, that's what life is. And I
[563.5-568.8] think that applies to animals and plants, go ahead. And people can call me crazy for saying that. But
[569.4-576.1] that's what my I guess, limited information has told me. I don't know what to say.
[576.1-581.3] I don't know. I think that's and that's what we explore here. Exactly what is this thing
[581.3-586.8] called consciousness? You know, when Bob started having his out of body experiences,
[586.8-592.1] and for those who don't know who Bob Monroe was, I should add here for full disclosure and
[592.1-598.9] transparency. He was my stepfather. And before that, a very good mentor friend. He was my first
[598.9-600.0] boss at age 40.
[600.0-604.8] Dr. PATELIN So I was a young, young teen. This man was a very important part of my life, and
[604.8-609.6] that's how it happened that I helped start the foundations of this institute because I
[609.6-614.5] was one of the guinea pigs. And what he was interested in was sleep-learning. He was interested
[614.5-619.9] in the out-of-body experience because it just happened to him. He would find his consciousness,
[619.9-628.1] Tim, beyond the scope of just this physical matter body. He thought he was going crazy.
[628.1-633.2] And so he went to psychiatrists, psychologists, medical doctors, what's happening to me, do
[633.2-635.5] I have a neurological problem, and so forth.
[635.5-640.1] And they said, no, you're fine, but hey, you may want to study these books, you know,
[640.1-641.9] on astral projection.
[641.9-646.2] And you'll notice a lot, for anyone who has read Bob's books, and the classic is Journeys
[646.2-652.2] Out of the Body, they'll notice that he chooses not to use certain words because they're so
[652.2-661.5] heavily laden with overtones of religion or other belief systems, and he didn't want to
[661.5-662.5] do that.
[662.5-667.9] So as opposed to calling it astral projection, he called it the out of body experience, much
[667.9-675.0] like now people instead of talking about psychic activity, they'll call it anomalous cognition.
[675.0-680.2] I think you talked with Ed May, our dear friend, not too long ago, and he probably mentioned
[680.2-681.2] that.
[681.2-682.2] I think in fact that might be his term.
[682.6-683.2] Oh, it just might be...
[683.2-684.2] Phenomenal cognition.
[684.2-687.0] Yeah, I think I do remember him saying that.
[687.0-695.1] So in any event, so going back to this, when you're looking into all these various states,
[695.1-698.2] who am I beyond just this physical body?
[698.2-705.0] Who am I beyond the person who goes to work, earns some money, comes home, raises the kids,
[705.0-706.9] drives the car, and so forth?
[706.9-717.0] And that's what we offer here, is this opportunity to get into deeper, more profound states of
[717.0-718.0] consciousness.
[718.0-726.2] You could say awareness about who you are, about what things are, about what else is
[726.2-731.7] quote unquote out there, but it's probably in there if you're following me.
[731.7-735.2] And then how can you use that to better your life?
[735.2-740.3] How can you use that to communicate better with people, to have better relationships,
[740.3-746.1] to be more creative, to learn how to use some pretty, what we would call incredible skills,
[746.1-752.2] but once you start learning all that's available to you, they're not anymore, such as healing,
[752.2-753.4] healing ability.
[753.4-758.6] And so we have all these various programs here at the Institute which offer gateways into
[758.6-763.5] these various areas, starting with our very first program, the Gateway Voyage Program.
[763.5-769.3] And this is what Bob started so many, many years ago, just trying to understand what was
[769.3-773.2] happening to himself with this out of body experience.
[773.2-777.5] The Gateway Voyage Program.
[777.5-779.9] What is that about?
[779.9-783.8] What does that entail?
[783.8-789.0] It's a five day, six night program, and it's what we call our flagship program, if you
[789.0-790.4] will.
[790.4-792.2] And this is the start.
