hemispheres begin to communicate more freely with each other and transcend the defensive
barriers. How can we facilitate this communication?
Hemi-Sync and Hemispheric Communication
It has been approximately one year since I began to study the effects of Hemi-Sync on cortical
activity. Study after study I was able to demonstrate objectively that Hemi-Sync does indeed
do what it is meant to do: synchronize the two hemispheres. What are the implications of this
inter-hemispheric synchronization? Once I recovered from the euphoria of observing
synchronized brain states after exposure to the Hemi-Sync signals, I began to explore what
was happening cognitively, as well as effectively, to each subject.
The results of my pilot study have been elating and quite exciting. In two studies, while
psychotherapy patients were exposed to the Hemi-Sync signals, they were asked to free-
associate—that is, to talk about whatever came to their minds. In both cases, from an objective
standpoint (cortical activity) two observations were made. Initially, there was a tendency
toward inter-hemispheric synchronization followed by brief moments of total bilateral
synchrony. It was during these moments of whole-brain synchrony that subjects often had an
aha, or clarity, experience. Based on these observations, I have come to believe that one of
the many states that Hemi-Sync facilitates is that of hemispheric communication or, perhaps,

an external driver we offer our data and findings—let them speak for themselves.
Theories of Hemi-Sync
Based on the findings of several studies presented in the Hemi-Sync Journal (see Sadigh,
1990,1991a, and 1991b), I wish to propose two theories of Hemi-Sync namely, the State
Enhancement Theory, and the Hemispheric Communication Theory.
The State Enhancement Theory
One important observation that we made in a number of Hemi-Sync studies was that subjects
exposed to the same Hemi-Sync signals achieved bilateral synchronization at different
frequencies. One explanation for this phenomenon is that Hemi-Sync goes beyond “blind”
entrainment. That is to say, unlike other brain-entrainment modalities which force the brain to
produce certain frequencies, Hemi-Sync actually collaborates with the brain to enhance its
naturally dominant state.
In summary, according to this theory:
Within a relatively defined frequency range, Hemi-Sync guides the brain to enhance and
synchronize itself at its own dominant and naturally occurring frequency and state.
Should we be able to continue to support this theory with further research, we may conclude
that Hemi-Sync is indeed a technology beyond entrainment and for that matter it is one of the
safest modalities for health improvement and enhancement.
The Hemispheric Communication Theory
A second Hemi-Sync theory in that of the Hemispheric Communication Theory. Based on

lowed by brief moments of total bilateral synchrony. It was during
these moments of whole-brain synchrony that subjects often had an
“aha,” or “clarity,” experience. Based on these observations, I have
come to believe that one of the many states that Hemi-Sync facilitates
is that of hemispheric communication (Hemi-Com) or, perhaps, as a
psychotherapist would put it, “an integration of content and affect”.
This, to a large extent, is what psychotherapy is all about, and it is
remarkable to observe that Hemi-Sync may indeed facilitate and

ment.
The Hemispheric Communication Theory (Hemi. Com.)
Based on studies observing the electrocortical activity of
patients undergoing psychotherapy, it appears that moments
of insight and “clarity” are preceded by moments of bilateral
synchrony (Sadigh 1991b). This is an important observation,
since in psychotherapy insight denotes an integration of cog-
nition (left brain) and affect (right brain).
In summary, this theory may be stated as follows:
Certain Hemi-Sync frequencies allow various uncon-
scious ego-defense mechanisms to be transcended,
which will in turn facilitate communication between

study, conducted at The Gateway Institute’s neuropsychological laboratory, provided me with
the initial proof that Hemi-Sync does work. Hemi-Sync entrained the brain of a subject to
achieve and maintain a full state of hemispheric synchrony within the theta range. Research
shows that as meditation subjects move toward the theta stage, they tend to either fall asleep
or rapidly move toward higher frequencies. The Hemi-Sync signal appears to help overcome
such tendencies.
During the second and third studies, a subject listened to Focus 12 tapes. The results of both
studies showed significant bilateral synchronization in the beta range. Also, at the end of the
third study, and at the end of the Hemi-Sync introduction, the subject was asked to “open the
Access Channel,” a specific command used in the HUMAN PLUS tape series, and which
prepares the listener to learn new cognitive tasks. For the first time, I witnessed a nonmeditator
achieving whole-brain synchrony without the use of a tape or the Hemi-Sync frequencies. This
was most important. It suggested that perhaps, after exposure to the signal for a period of
time, the subject may be capable of reentering a variety of states of consciousness without the
use of any external cues or technologies.
During this past year, I have conducted a number of new studies with Hemi-Sync. I was
especially interested in documenting subjects’ abilities to summon the effects of Hemi-Sync
without listening to tapes.

From July 24 through July 30, Professional Members from
Canada, Great Britain, Italy, South Africa, Switzerland, and the
United States convened at the Nancy Penn Center in Faber,
Virginia, for the Eleventh Annual Professional Seminar.
The theme of this year’s gathering, Transformation &
Rebirth: Cycles of Life 1993, was evocative of the reorganization
and evolution taking place at The Monroe Institute and changes
occurring in the lives of individual members. It was perfectly
expressed by the array of feature presentations forming the core
of seminar activities.
The initial presentation described a two-year research pro-

In her 1990 article, Guttman proposed using studies with species other than humans to
determine whether listening to binaural beat technology, namely Hemi-Sync, would
synchronize the left and right brain hemispheres and also result in a similar array of altered
behavioral effects as experienced by humans. A number of beneficial applications of the use of
Hemi-Sync for nonhuman animal species also were proposed. The first experimental test of
this proposal, using an equine subject, was reported in Guttman’s 1991 article. This study
showed that the equine brain became synchronized (as shown by Fourier-transformed EEGs)
as a result of listening to a music tape embedded with binaural beats.

recognition, for example) which might be generically similar across subjects.
There were several examples of rather dramatic similarity between the portraits of two sites for
the same epoch in the RO data (Figure 1). Since these sites are on opposite sides of the head,
hemispheric synchronization is strongly suggested. This can be confirmed by superimposing
the raw EEG records, noting the high degree of overlap (Figure 2).
Such apparent synchronization might have resulted from head-movement artifacts, which
affect all sites similarly and are strong enough to swamp the normally weaker brain waves.
However, this explanation is easily rejected by inspecting adjacent epochs.
Another possible explanation is that the apparent synchronization is due to entrainment. This
would be exciting if true, since it is the basic presupposition of the Hemi-Sync technology. In
order to test this hypothesis directly, one would need simultaneous EEG and Hemi-Sync
stimulus records, making it possible to investigate realtime correlations. Unfortunately, this was
not part of the brain mapping protocol. In any case, that explanation is ruled out for examples
of synchrony in the RO file which occur in the baseline epochs, when there is no auditory
stimulus at all.
Yet another hypothesis might be suggested. Hemispheric synchrony is known to be correlated
with certain relaxed states, quite independently of external stimuli, as was amply demonstrated

Berenice Luque, a phonoaudiologist in Rosario, Argentina, leads the interdisciplinary service
“El Angel” in the Provincial Children’s Hospital of Rosario and is a colleague of TMI
Professional Member and OUTREACH facilitator, Nora Rosen. Before beginning the usual
therapeutic and educational interventions, Berenice has her patients listen to Hemi-Sync®
tapes at least once a day—and three times a day if possible. This allows her to evaluate any
changes attributable to Hemi-Sync before treatment starts. The above case studies suggest
why El Angel’s schedule is so full that potential patients are on a waiting list.

usually discovers ways of reducing or deadening the sensory

Poor sensory integration may use variations of the same
strategies. They may find eye contact more difficult, move to
an inattentive world of daydreaming, or use alcohol or drugs to
deaden the senses and find greater internal calmness.
HEMI-SYNC AND SENSORY INTEGRATION
Hemi-Sync is an excellent example of the sensory integra-
tive process of the brain. Two independent auditory signals are
integrated in a way that produces a whole (i.e., Hemi-Sync)
which is different from each of the separate parts. Initial
processing and integration occurs in the brain stem. In addi-
tion, the tendency toward synchronization of the right and left
hemispheres appears to enhance attention, sensory and ex-
trasensory awareness, and intuitive processing, and to in-
crease successful adaptation to personal experiences.
Since 1981 I have been using Hemi-Sync with young
children who experience sensorimotor and sensory integrative
disabilities. Both clinical experience and preliminary research
indicate that the addition of Hemi-Sync signals (containing
